    End results, though.

    After six more years of service, the original device was retired. While the screen was still good everything else was failing - audio output full of static, all digital inputs dead, needed an HDMI-to-composite converter to use it at all, video signal would drop out after being used for a few hours.

    I suspect the power supply but no time to dissect it.

    Well, this project sat on the workbench long enough, here is the final outcome.

    I found multiple places that still had stock of the needed power PCB, most at a cost of USD ~$100 with shipping to Canada. Most had exactly the same quantity available, so were probably just storefronts with the same supplier. My friend wasn't sold on putting that much money into an old TV and possibly still ending up with it not working, so I proceeded with my earlier plan.

    Thanks for the suggestion, but with no power to activate the relay, I doubt the condition of the contacts is much of an issue.

    Taking some measurements, finally.



    No voltage across the two large caps (C6503/C6501), or the nearby resistors (R6200/R6202), same at IC6200 pin 5. R6202 has a resistance of about 36 kOhm, but I'm not sure what it should be - the only legible markings say 1 Watt and 104 J.

    With the TV plugged in (but the relay not closed), IC6200 reads 1.15VDC at pin 1, and 0.24VDC at pin 4. With the relay closed, these read 6VDC and 11VDC respectively, which are near spec....

    Oh my. That was... embarrassingly simple. After ernest's post above, I took a closer look at the relay, to find that there's a clearly visible line where the housing goes on, and even large clips showing it's intended to be removed. I gently pressed on the side of the housing to see how loose it was - and it just popped off. I had no idea they weren't sealed units.

    So I verified all the connections were in order, applied power, and manually closed the relay... After hitting the power button, the set lit up fine....

    I replaced the fusible resistor (R6016) on mine but there was no change. I couldn't find a suitable replacement for the relay in my parts bins so that's as much as I've had time for so far.

    ernest79336, can you show a picture of the uncovered relay? I didn't realize you could do that without destroying them or I would have tried it!

    IC6200 is a Panasonic MIP2H2. The datasheets all seem to be for complete power supply circuits, but I found a document on Scribd titled "[url=https://www.scribd.com/document/119862135/SONY-Training-Manual-Chassis-WAX2T]Sony Training Manual Chassis WAX2T[/url]" which shows the following table:

    I can't edit the first post any more, but I forgot to mention I'm looking to repair the problem board rather than replace it. It's a 2009 set and boards are scarce/expensive.

    This time around, I'm hoping I can save some friends from having to buy a new set. Their TV is the Sony Bravia KDL-46VE5 [URL="https://esupport.sony.com/CA/p/model-home.pl?mdl=KDL46VE5&template_id=1&region_id=3&tab=manuals#/manualsTab"][mfr link][/URL] - one day it just wouldn't turn on, and no LEDs were lit. There was no known physical trauma or input power issue.

    I've opened it up and blown the dust off, and done some minor poking around with a DMM... The only thing I've really determined is that there's no standby power / no voltages going to the main board....

    If the shape of the translucent sleeve in the last photo is fixed (i.e. you can't just unfold it), leaving the plastic backing on the thermal pads would make it easier to slide the PCB into place - especially if the pads have adhesive on both sides.

  • Corsair HX750 - no fan control

    Hi all, I just pulled this PSU out of storage and was happy that it still works within expected parameters, but also disappointed to find the fan is stuck on at full speed. From what little I've been able to find on the web, this model's controller makes decisions based on load as well as temperature. As the system I'm using it with doesn't even have an OS installed it seems unlikely that load is the problem, and since the unit isn't even in a case yet I'm guessing there's an issue with the temperature sensing.

    I'm going take some measurements via IR thermometer and then try powering...

    Thanks for that kc8adu, wish I would have seen it sooner. I got the replacement driver and new caps, and eventually got them wired in after bypassing the broken PCB traces. The second set of LEDs came on, but this also resulted in the initial symptoms (capacitive control buttons misbehaving) to return. Figuring the cause was the black blobbed IC and therefore irreparable, I pulled the newly installed driver and wired a switch onto the other output to select either the warm or cool lights. This worked great for about 45 seconds......

  • LED Reading Lamp - meltdown in driver compartment

    I'm looking to ID this part on the board from an LED lamp:


    The structural ribbing in the lamp housing is blackened above where the component was sitting. Guessing the PCB should have been fastened on an angle to keep the hot bits away from the plastic. The copper discs in the background are capacitive pads for the controls, which now glitch out to varying degrees.




    From the duplicity of the PCB (there are two strings of LEDs, warm/cool, only one of which works now) I believe the trashed part is the same as the one on the upper circuit,...

    @selldoor: That's what I was referring to in post #5. I fiddled around with my dmm's diode detection setting trying to come up with a way discern a diode vs a mosfet and couldn't see any real pattern, which is why I gave up and just removed it.

    @budm: Hello again, and thanks for the link - the diagram looks very similar to this PCB's layout. There are very few parts between the GPU chip and the output pin: the diode(?), a few small caps, and a resistor... I guess I could try replacing or removing the other ones as we...

    That site doesn't respond for me, but I think I get the usage here if it is a diode - basically, voltage goes out OK but is shunted to ground if it's coming in from whatever's plugged in?

    At any rate, I removed the part and nothing changed. Guess I'll have to live with it, or find a scrap PCIe card somewhere. Thanks again for your input rievax_60.

    Looking at it from the orientation in the photo, the left pins all lead to ground. The right pins are also tied together for each group (R/G/B, and then Vsync/Hsync/?), R=~20 Ohms.

    Well... The site above also lists "A7p" as a switching diode, so I may not have even identified the part properly... I still haven't found any confirmation of who the manufacturer might be, but as the card is from 1998 that's not completely surprising. I guess I'll try removing this part that acts differently from the other ones and see what happens.
