Hitachi DLP TV white dots on screen

    hi

i have a hitachi dlp tv that i got free about 7 yrs ago and bought a brand new lamp for it and it worked great.......i used it maybe total of 2 hours...its in my living room i dont watch tv in there so it has just sat unused for the past 5-6 yrs

well today i just powered it on and when it came on to my surprise it now has white dots all over that are stationary they do not move or change and also there is a 2 inch wide horizontal black stripe going across the screen on the top portion of tv that was never there before

and the display is so dim its almost impossible to see unless you get really close you can see a faint image and the screen seems like a weird grey color

what happened???,,,, i never used the tv at all and it worked great before...and its in mint condition...any ideas??? the lamp has 2 hrs on it and it was orig hitachi lamp cost me 300.00 new back then

its a hitachi ...the photo in my post is a sample of how the white dots look..minus the black horiz stripe....i will take a pic of my tv if i can soon....

note:...my home gets a ton of dust buildup........however i do have 2 other dlp tvs in my house and they work fine and havent used them in 5 yrs either....i jsut cant beleive anything could go wrong with the tv from just not using it........how can a component go bad when it snot being used

or is there something else causing the white dots.....grey display and almost no image...very very faint image when watching tv....and not sure what the heck the black horiz stripe is....very strange

I think that's indicative of a failed/failing DMD chip. Someone that knows more avout dlp's will chime in.

yeah thats what i have heard however the tv worked great 5 yrs ago and i never used it until now and its not working so im hesitant to say its a bad chip............it cant go bad from just sitting can it?

one day when i get a min i will try to take the tv apart and see whats going on inside....even though the tv is in mint condition....its worthless even fixed...noone wants dlp anymore.......so if there is a problem with it...it will be tossed in the trash.........im just hoping its something simple like maybe laoded with dust but the horizontal black stripe 2 inches high concerns me....dust would not create a perfect horizontal stripe

The white dots are stuck mirrors on the dlp chip. I have fixed a couple of dips by replacing replacing the chip

ok...tv going to trash...dlp chip costs as much as a new tv......pretty sad.....trash is monday....the chip should cost 20-50.00 not 200.00......ridiculous.....

Sure looks like dmd chip and they are not cheap if you can find one. 200 is not unheard of.

The service manual does not have a part number, Hitachi always replaced the complete light engine, here is a link for the manual

Here is a video which shows the problem and how you can see the problem on the ic itself once removed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PFs942JKPU

the odd thing about this issue is the tv worked perfect 5yrs ago...zero white dots....i havent used it in 5yrs....and turned it on few days ago and it had thousands of dots and basically no picture at all...and..just weird storm grey background with a few darker blobs and 1 horizontal black stripe 2inch thick......this all happened at one time when i powered on tv other day.....how can the tv component go bad from not being used?

if the white dots are defects why dont i have a picture in rest of areas?......i get no video or menu......just real faint image that u can barely even tell there is an image if u dont look hard

It's a mystery how parts can suddenly fail when a applicance is switched on after no being used for long time, but it happens. By varying the on and off times of the mirrors, the DMD chip controls the grayscale and therefore the intensity of the colors in the picture. I'm guessing here, but since your DMD chip is faulty, the feint picture you're seeing could be low intensity colors caused by low grayscale
