    Re: Sony kdl32xbr4 Vertical Stripes

Well, according to my meter, that 9.1K resistor is somewhere between 7 and 8 K OHMS, so maybe it's not the culprit.

Well if anyone can help out that would be great. I think I need to know how to tell if this resistor is OK. I know 5% is the tolerance, but I'm also getting two different ohm measurements depending on which leg of the resistor I touch the two probes.

For accurate measurement of the resistance, it would be best to remove the resistor from the board and then measure

Neelix: I'm just getting that now However, my solder station isn't very good. Was also wondering if those measurements in circuit would likely indicate the resistor is OK, or if they would be completely inaccurate.

The 7-8K ohms measurement you're getting indicates that the resistor is likely to be still OK

They call the TCON card a panel. Just send in the card if you cant find one at shopjimmy or other US source.

                Re: Sony kdl32xbr4 Vertical Stripes

yes, I kinda got that now. It looks like the problem is the TCON, and ironically the TCON is the only high value part in the unit.

I was hoping to possibly fix this one without replacing the TCON, as I really don't like to buy any expensive parts for these scrap TV's (usually not worth it).

if Bud or Tom or anyone else have any other ideas about how they might be "fixing" these TCONS, I'd sure be interested. Thanks!

So it shows 7~8K with probes in both directions?

                      bud,

Yeah I didn't write down the exact measurements , but they are in the 7 to 8 K range. about 400 ohms or so difference depending on direction.

I made a stab at desolder with old weller, but I don't think my iron can touch the factory solder? I have a new old weller still in the package that I'll be using soon, but if the resistor isn't likely bad, I sure shouldn't remove it with my limited soldering abilities here.

A lot of the new boards are use flux free solder so you will have to put flux on the connection to desolder it. You could use copper braid or a small hand held solder sucker.

bud, do you think I should even bother trying to remove the resistor and test ... or is it very likely OK given that measurement range? any other debug tips on this likely failing TCON? thanks!

Recently I fixed the same set and found the bad resistor was about 10 megaohm in circuit. To check you could just solder another 10K metal film resistor on top and see if that fixes the problem.

Yeah, I had read similar accounts on other forums. I'm no expert, but my guess is that 7-8K OHMS is a long way off from 10 mega ohms

did you try a little heat on the T CON board to see if the symptoms changes? heat around the ic and basically the whole board to see if the bars change fade or go away completely I've seen many many different symptoms on Sony t-con board in the past
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

I was surprised to find this TV working after removing, trying to "desolder" and then simply connecting the TCON back to the set! I'm thinking it may have been a simple case of just reseating the ribbons going to the TCON. Trying to run it for a few hours now, to see if something fails.

I only used two screws to hold the TCON back in, and I may have lost some of the screws while taking apart, because lately I don't put many sets back together as they are hardly ever something I can or will fix. I wonder if I can just carefully put this thing back together and keep it for my boy's future bedroom.
