    Toshiba 55G310U No Picture

    Good Morning,
I am looking for someone with good knowledge on Toshiba 55" LCD Tv's and a ton of patience. I have some electrical/electronic experience and wish to fix my broken 55G310U TV. The problem is as follows:
    1) Press the Power button and the green light comes on
    2) In a dark room you can see the blue glow from the backscreen ?
    3) There is no sound and no picture
    4) Picked this up from a recycling depot. Customer was told it would require a $1200 board to repair it.

I want to do this in a logical order, I am not a parts replacer. My experience is mostly DC as I am a Professor in the motive power trade at a local community college and am quite familiar with using a meter and all the little components in this TV. Not sure what all the boards are all called, know inverter, power supply, thats about it.
    1) First step: How not to kill myself. How do I know this is totally drained of power?
    2) Where to I clip my ground leads to for test purposes?
    3) Where do I begin this logical process?
    4) Where can I learn more about TV repair. Specifically LED, LCD and Plasma

How do I upload pictures to my post? It kicks back on me each time I try to add three pics.

    Re: Toshiba 55G310U No Picture

Ok - I know very little about Tvs and the more I learn the more I realize I dont know

I It should drain within 30 seconds but as it is faulty ???!!!! Use a rcd device and if possible have someone available. Work on a non conductive surface ( we have had members working on a metal bench!!!) - It is the BIG capacitors on the power supply board that can store up the power - you can test there with your meter on 600VDC to make sure it has discharged.
2 It depends on what you are testing - normally we would advise as we go - if we dont - ask.
    3 - see 4
    4 - read the first 4 threads (stickies) https://www.badcaps.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=31

There is a maximum upload of 3mb so you can upload i pic of 3mb at a time.
If you want to upload a few then you have to reduce the size of each one to keep within the limit.

Hint - try and find a schematic or service manual for your set.
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

What I'm hearing from your initial diagnosis points to the tcon or main board as the most likely failures. If you have a source signal do you get sound? You can push the input repeatedly to cycle through waiting a few seconds on each one. If you have sound I would then have the tcon as primary suspect. If you look carefully there should be a fuse very near where the lvds cable plugs into the tcon, verify the fuse is good....if so do a voltage check on both sides of the fuse. If no voltage on either side you can pretty much assume that the main board has a failure. Because of the complex circritry and the unavailibilty of schematics main boards are notoriously difficult to repair. There may be fuses you can test on the main as well. I've had Samsung and vizio fuses fail from fatigue with no other faults present.

The best bet for learning what to do or not to do is follow selldoors advice and read all the stickies, then read some more threads on toshibas. Most of the big brands have similar engineering across multiple models and tend to have similar failures, although lately Toshiba has been rebadging vestel sets.

Look for T-CON board: something like this:

Does Tom66 have another link to his library or is that closed now?

Try elektrotanya dot com. Not tom's site but has lots of manuals.

Not having much luck finding a service manual on this unit. Anybody have any ideas? If I shine a flashlight on the screen, this would indicate a bad inverter would it not? If it was mainboard, I should see nothing at all?

You have indicate blue glow on the screen so the inverter/bakclights are on. How about the T-CON as I requested?

Ok here is an update. I checked all the voltages on the power supply and they are as they should be. I got loking around the TCON board in the top center section and found that it had been apart and the ribbons at the top had not been reconnected. So I reconnected them and put everything back together and turned it on. Here is what happened.
The green light came on for power, the screen went a whitish blue and had dark horizontal lines across it for a few seconds and then blanked out and then the top one third of the screen did this again and then it slowly faded into darkness into the top left corner. No change after that.

Update. So I went to the TCON board and figured I would check the fuse and nose around a little. After removing the board and getting it under a better light, I found the right side chipset, AUO-12401, had leaked smoke out of it. I guess we need a TCON. Kind of makes me wonder what else I am going to find once I have that repaired.

Sorry I tried to add pictures but each time it just disappears?

I pressed the upload button and waited. It said it was waiting for BadCaps reply. Then the page went blank and never cam back. I didn't close it at all. I just finished doing the same type of thing on another similar forum with no problems. Very strange.

                              Tom,
Do you have any idea why this is happening. Second question. I can't open the links from your webpages on service manuals. I tried Toshiba and a couple of others and no luck-blank page or webpage is no longer available. Do you know where to get service manual for this TV?

Going back to pictures - they may be too big try reducing them to jpgs less the 3mb
each and if loading a few less then 3mb in total
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair
