Sony KDL-46VL130 Red Light 8 blinks

    Hey folks,

Picked up a KDL-46VL130 that the previous owner said had some lines on the display, he had tried to work on it, and said he shorted something out putting the bezel back on. I opened it up, saw nothing obviously bad, except what appears to be a fuse that may have failed. Plugged the TV in, got 5 blinks. unplugged it, unplugged the cables running the the MBD to see if it would come up that way, nothing, so I unplugged it and went to plug cables back in, but like an idiot I didn't give it enough time to discharge. I plugged one of the cables back into the power supply board and heard the sound of something on the right side of the TV zap, but I have no idea what. I went ahead and put everything back together, and now I get 8 blinks instead of 5. If I had just done some research on the 5 blinks BEFORE I started tinkering, I would have found 5 indicates the T-Con board, which, lo and behold, was unplugged. So.. anyone have a service manual for this model?

(Fuse(?) in question is the one circled in the second photo....)

Found the service manual... 8 blinks appears to indicate "Audio Protector". Other searches indicate the AU board needs to be replaced... thoughts? The service manual is 14.9 MB, If tom66 is around I can email it to you, but I lost your address already.

Thanks for the tip, bud. I downloaded the training manual, def. indicates the AU board. I'll get that replaced then go from there. I think once I get that replaced, the original issue was with tab bonds. Any recommendations on where to buy the foam pads everyone is recommending? Also, Does anyone have a referral they can offer for elektrotanya, so I can sign up?

Wow, $15/ea is pricey lol. But those work better than this method? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHst6pKLtTE

With the thermal pads, you just put those right over the spots having problems then pop the frame back on over top, I assume? I found the AU board for $10, so I should have that next week, so I can get back to getting this thing running.

Re: Sony KDL-46VL130 Red Light 8 blinks

Good news/good news/bad news. Got the new AU board in, replaced it, and I no longer get the 8 blinks. I also double checked what I thought was a fuse before, and it's a resistor, so that's good.

Bad news - the TV still gives 5 blinks when turned on, indicating a T-con failure. I've checked and triple checked the connections to the T-con, and everything is secure. The previous owner said he was taking the bezel on and off repeatedly to try to fix an issue with lines in the screen (I'm guessing he was futzing with the tab bonds) and the last time he put the bezel on something shorted out. Is it possible he grounded something out with the LCD frame that would cause the T-con not to come up? The training manual says:

                  "TCON Error 5X
Communications have been lost between the video processor on the FB1/FB3 board and the TCON (TFT Control) board which is part of the LCD panel. This can be caused by a defective FB1/FB3 board, a defective LVDS cable, or a TCON failure."

So I guess the big question is, what are the chances the frame shorted something out and I don't have to buy a new T-con, and what are the chances it's the T-con or FB3 that actually failed? the Flowchart for troubleshooting the flashing lights indicates I need to replace the FB3 board. I can tear this thing back apart if I have to, to get the frame off and see if there is any visible damage, but what other troubleshooting can anyone recommend?

Admittedly, I did not. It was close to 2 am by the time I got everything re-assembled. I'll check that tonight. I have a very inquisitive 4 year old, who likes to get involved in everything daddy does. Which is good, except when she likes to touch things and ask what they are... The last thing I need to do is explain to momma why our daughter got electrocuted....... That means the only time I get to work on this stuff is after she's in bed, since my "workbench" is my kitchen table....

Ok, Wife woke up and Disney princesses kept the 4 year old occupied long enough for me to check, I've attached a pic of what I believe is the fuse in question along with an over-all pic of the T-con, and it is definitely popped. I can't tell what kind of fuse that is to order a replacement, but it appears to maybe be one of these.

Good catch, I must have left that unplugged during my earlier, misguided attempt at troubleshooting. I reconnected it, but that didn't have any impact on operation at the moment (although I'm sure it would one I get the t-con fixed.

so, anyone have any input on that t-con fuse? Is that a slow-blo fuse, or do I need to get something else? do you think just replacing that fuse will work, or could this guy have actually shorted something putting the bezel back on?

ok, fuse replaced, T-con working, TV powers up! Now that I've gotten it to this point, I'm able to troubleshoot the original issue, which was lines on the screen. I checked the tab bonds, and one cable in particular (top right corner of the screen, when looking at the front) fixes almost the entire problem, but leaves one vertical line, approximately 1 pixel wide down the whole panel. I've attached a few pictures of the line, plus one picture showing the issue when the cable isn't being held down to the board.

Any thoughts on if/how I can get rid of that last line? I checked the other ribbon cables, and didn't seem to be able to cause any change. This is the ribbon when it's not held flat: Click image for larger version

The other 4 pics are all with the cable held down. Sorry for the quality, the best camera I have is my Galaxy S3, and I had the lights off so you could see the screen better.

Re: Sony KDL-46VL130 Red Light 8 blinks

"Some LCD panel failures could possibly be mistaken for TCON issues. Other than damage to the LCD glass, most panel failures are isolated to a particular area of the screen. Since the TCON disperses the pixel data to groups of line and column drive IC’s situated on the outer edges of the panel, it is unlikely that more than one of these IC’s would fail at the same time. Multiple columns of stuck on or stuck off pixels are, therefore, more likely to be the fault of the TCON circuits. The same applies to a single row of lit or unlit pixels. The TCON simply cannot cut out a single line of information."

"Source driver failure. This symptom appears as a single vertical band around 1 to 2 inches (depending on the panel size) and can be black, white, or any other color. It can also contain video information with distortion. A single vertical line that is dark or colored. This may be due to a tab bonding failure from the IC to the panel but either cause requires the replacement of the panel."

The picture on page 11, with "Source Tab Bond Failure" is similar to what I see (but the line appears sort of purplish instead of blue). I've tried putting pressure on all the tab bonds along the top, and it didn't change that one line. If I'm reading this right, that would mean it's a Source driver failure, and the panel is worthless, correct?

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I was holding out hope someone might answer. Can someone tell me if replacing the (apparently) failed "Source driver" is even possible on this model, or should I strip what I can out of this thing and scrap the rest?

                                          Hi everyone!
I have a Sony KD-65A1 TV with a fault – 4 red LED blinks. After disassembly and visual inspection, I found that the G76 power board and DKA board had been replaced. It is also possible that TCON was replaced, but I am not sure – there are a few marker marks that could be factory-made.

Based on assumptions, the previous service attempted to solve the issue by replacing potentially faulty components. I decided to investigate further, found a service manual, and figured out a way to power up the power supply unit autonomously and put the OLED panel and...

Hi I'm new to trying to repair TVs, but I saw a broken OLED offered for a reasonable price and thought I'd try my hand at it.

I found the service manual, which was critical to know where to probe.
                                          https://www.manualslib.com/manual/20...1e-Series.html

With it I was able to determine that my DKA board was bad, when P_ON#1/2 gets enabled REG_12 on the DKA board collapses. I'm assuming one of the downstream regulators has a short, but I couldn't work out which rail/component and replaced the DKA board entirely.

                                          Unfortunately the 5-blinks...

                                          Hi all,

I have the subject TV and it will work normally sometimes but suddenly go black and give the 2 red blinks blink code. When this happens, I check the power supply board voltages and all I have is the Standby 3.3V and BL_ERR 2.2V. When it's working normally, all power supply board voltages look normal and stable. I've checked the backlights with a tester and they all test good. I've also read that the 2 red blinks is a faulty power supply board, so could it be throwing up an erroneous BL_ERR?

Any Sony experts out there that can help??...

                                          Hello all ~

I’m working on this Samsung 60” LED and purchased a new main board a couple of days ago that did not fix the 5 blink issue. The original main board’s HDMI ports (all 4 of them) failed to work and no amount of reflow remedied that.

This 5 red light blink code on the front panel LED is followed (about 15-20 seconds afterward) by an automatic reboot, and results in 5 more red light blinks. Then the entire cycle repeats itself indefinitely.

                                          No picture. No sound.

I tested all the voltages coming out of the power supply...
