I have managed to remove 4 FET's (igfets) from an sd board with my trusty old Weller soldering gun. Are the pads on the boards heat sinks or just connection points? I am thinking I might damage the new parts by overheating on installation so I was thinking of just tacking them to the pad and adding heat sinks on top using thermal adhesive. Sound like a good plan? I don't have an air station so I have to use my iron (50W adj temp control) and 100 wat weller gun.

both connection and the heatsink. I used an 80W iron, tinned the transistors and used flux. Went ok, not as pretty as factory. -

I'll do it that, if it fires up, then I'll add the heat sinks anyway, as I see it, the cooler the better, and I already have them. I want it to last if i resell it.Comment

I doubt you can overheat them. I've done many MOSFET swaps on motherboards and video cards and all I can say is, these boogers are real tough. As long as you don't damage them by breaking a leg off, they are fine. I even removed a bunch with a blow torch (the donor motherboard had serious trace damage, so not like I cared about it). Got the cases on those MOSFETs charred pretty badly too. But after a quick alcohol wipe, I tested them and they were perfectly functional.Originally posted by truep View PostComment
