Hi guys,
Just a general question. Usually on mobile devices/laptops the battery pack consists of lithium ion cells with their +/- tabs welded onto the controller IC. I'm wondering, in general if it can be assumed that one can find a replacement lithium ion cell, is it ok to simply re-use the old controller IC in an attempt to re-build the pack? Or is that controller somehow paired to the cells from the factory?
From my experience it sometimes seems to be hit or miss. Not sure if this is true, but sometimes it's almost as if the controller IC will go to a failsafe if the battery pack is ever disconnected...then it becomes unusable. Would it be advisable to keep some voltage on the controller while the battery packs are being transplanted?
Also, since you'll never be able to get the exact OE lithium ion cells, is it ok to downsize the pack slightly? eg. how much is the risk that the controller would think the cells are greater in capacity and overcharge the cells.
Would love to hear what your guys' experience has been with trying to rebuild these battery packs.
