Just got burned on 52" Sharp LCD

A$$hole sells me a 52" LCD for $75, claiming the TV only displays blue horizontal lines when powered on. So I buy it thinking TCON or main board problem.

I get home and turn it on and it looks like someone smacked it with a baseball right in the center. LCD is cracked as hell.

Let this be reminder to everyone buying TV's for repair, make them turn it on or whatever, check it out before you buy it and don't take anyone's word for anything.

    Oh ya, and Merry Christmas!

I usually always tell them to turn it on first. Or if they wanna meet in some parking lot, I bring out my little power inverter and power it up beforehand (They usually never expect it ;]).

You could probably sell the parts on ebay for more than 75$ though maybe.

Ya this is the last time I buy a TV without making them plug it in before I hand them cash

Sorry to hear that, I know how it feels.
What size of inverter would work, let's say up to 52" TVs?
I was acctually thinking of getting an inverter.
Usually when I pick up TVs the light in the house it's pretty dim and it's hard to see the TV's condition. I take a flashlight with me, or use my phone with a flashlight app.

The back of my 52" lcd says about 285W. Usually lcd tvs run about 200-300W depending on size.

I have a 410W inverter which usually is enough power, hooking on my car battery. Its 410W continuous and 820W Peak (You'd want to look at the specs where it says "continuous" power since some brands they label only the peak power).

Re: Just got burned on 52" Sharp LCD

I just went through the same thing last weekend. I went on a road trip and swept through Chicago, north up to Racine, WI, picking up as many broken tvs as I could fit in the van. By the time I got to the last guy, who just happened to want to meet me in front of the mall, I forgot all about the inverter on my passenger's seat. Long story short, I'm only out $40 but I'd sure love to give him this tv back, right through his car window. Lesson learned.

                    Oh ya, and Merry Christmas!

The problem here is that often times, you cannot turn the
inverters and the back lights on to even check this, even if you have
access to an outlet, because the power supply is bad.

Some people have had success with a very BRIGHT flashlight,
preferably in a dark room, where you can sometimes see a crack
                    even with the TV off.

But yeah, don't believe what a seller will tell you, because either
they are lying, or they were told "it's an easy fix" by someone
who doesn't know much about repairs. And they are often
unaware of damage done to the screen AFTER the TV has stopped
working (kids threw a ball into screen, etc...).

I personally never pay more than $50 for a set, but then again,
I've never gotten a 52". But don't be afraid to haggle the
price lower: educate the seller on the risk you are taking: You
may not be able to fix it, and the screen may be cracked, etc.

Good Luck, and merry X-mas to all!

I've only been burned once, on a 32" which I bought for £20. Was able to sell the parts for more.

Re: Just got burned on 52" Sharp LCD

Most people are honest and a few are not. Some list the TV as having a broken screen but still under warranty saying they don't want the hassle of getting it fixed or they have an estimate for $150 to repair the screen but already replaced it and will give the name of the repair shop when you buy the set.

Then there are the ones who say the screen is only broken on the inside? Like that makes it different...or it has multicolored lines but is not broken.

The worst ones are the ones who don't tell you that they or a friend tried to fix it and made it worse or started a fire inside the set.

Too much info on the internet for the 'handyman' who thinks he can repair electronics by replacing the fuse with a bigger one....or use a soldering gun and drip solder on the wires or other parts.

I have not been taken by the 'screen is not broken' yet but I have fallen for the 'set has not been opened before'. They lie and they take your money and waste your time. And when you contact them later, they say 'tough luck sucker'.

So I don't feel like I cheated someone when it turns out to be a simple repair and I got the set at a good price. I take the risk and sometimes I get the reward. I just have to watch out for the dishonest seller who wants to stick it to some other person... when the set really is beyond repair.
