    Bad transformers in power supply

Obviously this is a question for the more experienced technicians here -

I was wondering if you've ever found a transformer to be the cause failure in a power supply. If so, how can you can troubleshoot these and find a replacement?

    Thanks!

5vsb transformers in Antec SmartPower power supplies have been reported to fail. I don't know the reason of failure and how you can easily test a transformer to see if it is bad...

You need ringer tester for finding out if it has shorted turn. What is the power supply not doing? Turn on and then shutdown? Blowing fuse or MOSFET? I have yet to replace the transformer in the power supply, but I did replace a lot of high voltage transformers.

I was just asking a general question. I've never bothered to check a transformer in a power supply for two reasons.

          1. I"ve never had a reason to suspect a faulty one
          2. I wouldn't know how

I was just wondering how often they might fail, and what the more experienced guys here have seen

Re: Bad transformers in power supply

In TVs, I haven't seen one bad in ANY flat panel type TV. I saw a few years ago in CRT sets. You will occasionally see a bad power transformer in audio systems, due to the high power requirements of high wattage receivers. Those failures can usually be found by continuity testing. Most often the primary winding opens up.
