Bad Y-buffer, Do I need sustain board also?

Hi, I have a 50" Samsung Plasma TV and, as a lot of samsung plasma owners, my Y-buffer has burned. It is the upper buffer and I know this because I physically see a burned IC in the buffer board. I took the bad buffer out and plugged the TV back in to see if anything happened (I saw a video where a guy said that I could tell if the lower was bad also???) I got a few white flashing lines in the lower portion of the screen and then I felt the IC's they were heated to roughly 90 degrees within seconds so I immediately unplugged the TV.

I am not a technician but I have been repairing computers for 7 years so I felt like I could tackle this task. Pardon my ignorance, I am attempting to learn as much as possible. So to my questions...

    - Is the sustain board going to need to be replaced also?
    - Is there a way to tell if the board is bad?
    - Should I replace both buffer boards?
    - I'm seeing that if I have to replace all three this would roughly cost me $250-300. Does this price sound correct?
    - Should I scrap the TV and buy a brand new LCD of better quality for $750?

    Thanks in advance,
    dcreb

It is recommended to replaced all three boards (lower and upper buffer, and the y sustain). I had one plasma where the ic had burned. found a non working lower buffer and decided to use the seemingly good ic and used it to replace the burned out ic. Took about 7 hours of work then Hooked everything up and one minute later heard a pop sound and the ic burnt out on the same spot again sad story lol,

Replacing the upper buffer might fix the problem, but it might not last very long.

I would replace both buffers but not the Y-sustain at the first place.
But I would never even try to repair a buffer board, totally waste of time.

I never work with plasmas, unless I get them for free

Plasma TVs are fun and challenging to work on...

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I respect that I should order all and I figured that would be the optimal thing to do but I don't want to spend $300 on an old TV when I could buy a brand new one of better quality for $750. So I guess I have one more question... Is it possible that the sustain board made the buffer go bad? I would like to order just the buffers (I will order both lower and upper) to see if that fixes the problem but I don't want to hook up my good buffers ($135) and blow them because I have a bad sustain. Also, is there any way to test the sustain? Thanks again

                Hey dcreb,

I'm not an expert by any means, but I will tell you what I have had happen in regards to the LG 50' plasma I have fixed/am in the process of fixing. Originally it was given to me because it had a 3 or 4" black and/or red line running across the top. The owner thought it would be almost as much to fix as to get a new one, so he gave it to me.

So, I troubleshot and figured out it was the upper y buffer board. I ordered it and within a week I had a perfect picture! I was proud that for less than $80 I had a new huge TV.

However, within a week of that, the whole picture went out. I was hesitant to put much money in it, but figured I was still way ahead. I took my time troubleshooting it and figured out it is probably the bottom Y buffer board that is bad now. I should have that within a few days, and I am praying the sustain board doesn't need replaced too, because I'm kind of like you, don't want to put much money in it when I can get a new one for not too much more.

When I mentioned my concern that the other board would go bad within a week of replacing the other, someone suggested that it puts more strain on the weaker parts so that's why the other board went bad so quickly. I would certainly replace them both at the same time knowing that. Hopefully the same thing doesn't happen with the sustain board.

                  Hello people!
My Hitachi plasma would not turn on, and had visible damage on one of the ICs on the upper Y-buffer board, so I removed it(the board), turned it back on and the lower part of the screen worked for 30 seconds before blowing out (with a small bang) two of the lower Y-buffer ICs.
So could I have caused this by turning it on with the upper buffer board disconnected?
Or is the Y-sus bad? (Vs/Va voltages all are perfect) And is there ANY chance the Z-sus could be the reason of these problems? Don't get me wrong though, I know you cannot give me a definitive answer, just a suggestion based on experience would be enough

Re: Bad Y-buffer, Do I need sustain board also?

Think I can help a little......my first plasma repair was a bad Y sus board almost 2 years ago!! Since......I have fixed a few, once I was able to understand how they work. You can YES test to see if the buffers are bad but you would require an oscilloscope to measure variable voltage off the buffers. The reason most replace buffers when replacing a bad sustain board is......if the buffers were the reason the sustain went bad to begin with then hooking a replacement sustain into bad buffers will only fry the replacement board too!! Here is the step by step video I made of my first sustain repair. I was able to test and verify good buffers but a bad sustain. There are various sources online that will sell good tested boards for a fraction of the cost of new!

A year later the same tv had started acting up.after replacing the Y sus a year prior, this time around the z sus was the culprit and I replaced the buffers with the sustain board as they sure looked suspect. Once again documented my findings in this video. Hope this helps? Point is.....in both cases, the cost of replacement boards was very minimum and it was worth saving the set
