Re: Samsung PN50C550G1F black horizontal lines

I have a PN50C550G1F that I bought 10/2010 , it's lightly used. One thin (single pixle) horizontal line appeared across the whole width of screen couple of days ago. I chatted online with samsung and they referred me to their authorized service for my out of warranty TV. The service center gives a repair estimate after a $99 evaluation but was nice to say this is most likely a bad panel, very expensive repair and it's generally cheaper to buy another instead. The service center indicated the problem mostly appears after tv is impacted or knocked that is not the case with mine as my tv is wall mounted and nothing touches it or shake it.Searching the internet tells me this is a common problem with plasma tv's and in particular more so with Samsung's.
My older tv's never died , even when I threw them out after 10 years or so and I have a 9 yrs old DLP that has not even had a lamp replaced. It's a very BAD QUALITY when expensive tv goes bad and not worth the repair expense.
I see on occasions consumers manage to make the manufacturer do something about such lousy products. This issue of one pixle black horizontal line on samsung tv seem to me more of legal issue of how to deal with samsung than a technical repair issue.

Re: Samsung PN50C550G1F black horizontal lines

        Greetings,

I inherited a Samsung PN50C450B1DXZA which is a 720p plasma set from a friend of mine after he got tired of looking at the horizontal black lines that kept appearing on the screen. The set was not abused but the number of lines have grown over time (there are now 16 total, some by themselves and a few grouped together) and the set is only a few years old but out of warranty.

Anyway, I first tried reseating the ribbon cables on the Y-buffer board to see if that would have any effect but the lines remained (none added and none went away).

After much research, I purchased used Y-buffer and Y-main boards off of Ebay and replaced the original boards in the set with these other boards and there is still no change -the black horizontal lines are still present in the same places that they were prior to swapping the boards (none added and none of original lines were fixed). I removed both original boards as a set and replaced them as a set per one of the previous posts which stated that this was way to do it to avoid one defective board from damaging the other board.

Should I now assume that the panel itself is defective and throw in the towel or should I consider replacing the logic board or something else that may be causing the lines? I hate to keep throwing good money after bad but its a nice TV and I hate the thought of junking it.

Re: Samsung PN50C550G1F black horizontal lines

The panel is defective, it is quite common with this series of TV. Both horizontal and vertical lines are defective panels on this model as we have found out from attempting to repair them.

            Thanks for the information Tom66.

I guess I can stop throwing money at this lost cause and just watch it until the black lines overtake enough of the screen to make watching it intolerable,
            then part it out.

Re: Samsung PN50C550G1F black horizontal lines

I have the same issue. I have a PN50C7000YF. It is exactly 2 years old. Has been used less than 100 hours and horizontal black lines are appearing in greater and greater numbers in the bottom of the panel. They are all in the area of the bottom chip on the y-buffer. Connectors have been cleaned, but that didn't help. I was hoping it would be the y buffer, however, Samsung agents and several techs (referred to me by Samsung) are all telling me it is the panel. They are all a little cagey, but they all admit under their breath that Samsung is aware of the issue - and that it is the panel. Yet Samsung is unwilling to do anything about it. $2000 for less than 100 hours is ridiculous. I will keep chasing Samsung for a resolution. In the meantime, if anyone is successful fixing this problem in a Samsung plasma panel by replacing the y buffer, please let me know.

Re: Samsung PN50C550G1F black horizontal lines

You can add the PN50C6400 super slim plasma to the list!

TV is just over 2 years old with about 4 hours of use per week. One single thin horizontal line about 3 inches from the bottom edge of the screen. I was considering swapping the y-buffer board, but after reading some comments here about the panel likely being at fault, I don't think I'll be throwing money in that direction.

This is very disappointing to say the least. I spent a fair chunk of money on this TV not too long ago. I don't want to spend $99 for a Samsung tech to tell me it's a panel fault that will require more $$$ investment for something that will just fail 3 years down the road.

This really sucks. I thought that they had a quality product. I don't like the idea of giving them more money without some sort of compensation for this tremendous waste.

Perhaps I should go back to a Japanese product. My old Sony CRT was indestructible.

Samsung do not produce quality products. I know, I have repaired far too many.
Panasonic or newer LG are my only choices for plasma. Panasonic preferred.

I have the same problem with my PN50C550G1FXZC. After the warrenty , I have one horizon line occured and now I have more than 30 lines. I will buy a LED next time and Samsung is shame for this product. It is a quality issue and as a custom, we should do something to fight with Samsung. Hope we can find a fair solution. Best!

I got two Samsung Plasma model PN50C6400 the other day, the horizontal lines are in different positions in these two TVs, I exchanged the y-buffer boards, but the line position were not change.
So I abandoned to repair them, definitely panel problem. Have a feeling the 2010 model of Samsung Plasma have the same common issues.

Did I leave the soldering iron on?

Might be appropriate to start a new thread with "POSSIBLE CLASS ACTION" or such in the title to garner more attention. That's if the mods don't find it to be spam-like lol.

THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON WITH THIS SERIES AND CAN NO LONGER BE IGNORED. I purchased my Samsung PN50C550G1F at Costco in late November 2010. A single horizontal black line showed up just below the centre of the screen in June 2013 followed by a 2nd line, a third, then two more and so forth. All perfectly horizontal and fairly thin black lines that multiply until viewing is nothing but aggravation. When I first looked up this problem online there were only a few owners that experienced exactly this issue but Samsung denied that this was a common defect and offered little or no help outside of warranty. My PN50C550 has just been parked against the back of my couch for almost a year in the hopes of finding a solution, aside from selling it for peanuts on Kijiji. Just today I started to look a little deeper and it seems there are a lot of frustrated owners with the exact same problem. A class action lawsuit seems more than warranted in this situation. Is anyone aware that one has been started or can give tips on how to proceed? I would be on board in an instant. I'm sure you agree that a thousand (or more) dollar device should last more than a measly 2 1/2 years don't you agree?

Contact Tony Merchant Law Office in Regina. He is the class action king, and has had some pretty good success on some pretty big files. Google him. He was the guy who represented Colin Thatcher the Saskatchewan cabinet minister who was convicted of shooting and beating his ex wife to death with a hatchet so his large ranch wouldn't have to be sold and 50/50'd to her. That, plus he is a sociopath.

Anyhow, Merchant Law. Kinda like Troy McClure, only real.

As I type this on my Samsung tablet after seeing my email notification on my Samsung phone looking at my 32 inch Samsung that is sitting in front of my 54' Samsung that I can't even look at anymore.

Forgot to mention that I know that the issue is with the screen. Faulty ICs on the horizontal line inputs. I can replace the screen with a versiion that is 4 revisions beyond my current screen. For ~$800 do it yourself.

                                          Tom,

Your comments on this thread made me remember talks a long time ago on the panasonic plasma you helped me fix.

I believe I wound up replacing with an SU/SD/SC combo from another set. However a thin black partial horizontal line defect remained. It's not that bad, and so I've lived with it, and the set hasn't failed again yet (despite running all day and most of the night). I thought we determined it was a panel fault, but I can't remember why or how? Could it have been something with the ribbon connector?

                                            Hi guys

I just started fixing 4k TV few months ago. so I am still learning a lot
I got this tv from friend complaint is ghosting or horizontal lines on image.

never saw the original symptom but I took the tv back home. the funny part is that after bringing to home, the tv worked fine no issue for 3 weeks.
then it started to show the ghosting white image.
I started using the tape method, but this tv does not have a T con board and it has only 1 ribbon cable from main board to the tv panel.
it has 3 thin small boards at the bottom of the...

Samsung plasma 50" TV, model PN50C540G3F, has black horizontal lines

First, the black horizontal lines even overlay the TV's menu. Does this behavior indicate that it's the plasma panel that's defective? If not for the black lines, the TV works just fine. I've cleaned the 6 connectors between the panel and the Y-buffer board, causing no change in the black lines. Visually, the 12 ICs on the Y-buffer look brand new (no holes, etc.). I put my fluke meter in continuity mode and tried to perform the "short" test on the 6 panel ports and found many shorts. But I don't think I'm doing the "short" test correctly and I'm hoping someone can provide guidance....

I posted about this previously but didn't get any response, and I have some troubleshooted a bit so I have more info.

The screen is full of horizontal "gaps" or lines that distort the picture badly, and after about 10 seconds of powering it on the screen starts to fill with red vertical bars that take on the horizontal pattern. After the screen filled with the red bars, they instantly vanished and then slowly started to reappear. I initially thought it was tab bonding failure, but after getting down to them and pressing each one I find zero change in the picture. I went...

Hi, I'm new around here and hoping that there may still be some people on here that are knowledgable about plasma display repair, as some of the old badcaps forum posts have been pretty useful to me so far.

For any regular plasma TV I probably wouldn't bother to go through this effort, but I have a pro-grade Pioneer plasma which I really want to use and it would be a shame to throw it out since there's not many of them still around these days. The plasma has the typical black horizontal lines that seem plague plasma displays. I've counted 3 lines on top of the screen and 4 at the...
