    Solytech/deer getting better

Brand spankin' new rosewill 350W psu. $25 on newegg, my dad needed one for his computer, combined with the other parts the cost of getting the seasonic 300w was too much. Shaved a bit off by getting this instead. Very impressed by build quality actually.

This has the same PCB layout as my rebuilt Rosewill 350W, same ratings, but much more parts.

Overkill input filter, 3 X caps, 4 Y caps, 2 coils. (2 Y caps, 1 coil, and 1 X cap on the pcb on the receptacle)

YC Caps on secondary, primaries are Anodia. Actual bridge rectifier good for 400v, 6A. Secondary silicon are pretty beefy. 12v and 5v have 30A, 45v parts, 3.3v has 20A, 45v part. Actual 35 transformer, not the fake 35 like in my other deer, about 1/2" taller than my 33 old transformer from my yuelin. Fan is a very quiet silence (same company enermax uses for fans,) sleeve bearing and is temp controlled, with the sensor bolted to the secondary heatsink.

Once done being under surgery from my soldering iron with new nichicon PW's, it will be a pretty good psu. 5vsb before measured 5.07, all other voltages with no load were 12.51, 5.17, and 3.23.

I must say that this Solytech/Deer power supply is impressive looking, considering the previous history of Deer-made power supplies.

I guess Deer wants to improve their reputation under the Solytech brand name. At $25 USD for that power supply, it is a very good deal considering the quality (besides the electrolytic caps used).

The only thing that concerns me is the 20A 45v part on the 3.3v, as that is the max rating for the 3.3v. Cutting it a bit close if you ask me, but it is capable of it, but probalby at 25C. Not really digging the puke-green caps, but they are not visible, and are gone now. Also, can't find any info on those strange Anodia caps.

I don't think this little emachines will draw nearly that much from the 3.3v though.

BWA HA HA, look at the date stamp on the pictures, I think I need to reset the clock on this stupid HP camera, can't take pics for crap. Those were the only 4 non-blury picks out of about 25.

Not that bad at all for $25. Well, the capacitors could have been at least Teapo or Ost, but other than that this power supply actually looks like something that you can use.

How's the soldering on the other side?

i noticed that the pcb has a spot for a bridge, not a spot for 4 diodes with a bridge monkeyed in there. not too bad. thin wire?

          heatsinks could be better.

im curious: is a-power getting better or are they still chicken crap?

            Well, they're all nichicon now

I didn't get a chance to flip it over and check out the soldering. My dad wanted it done and I didn't want anything to happen to it. I think I might buy one for myself to do a complete run over with.

@ratdude747, I noticed it dosen't have any provision for 4 diodes. FINALLY.

              Bridge could use a heatsink.

I still don't trust it - looks a lot like the Allied I reviewed. Looked half decent, but then it went and blew out the primary side when I asked for the label ratings.

But for an eMachines computer (I'm guessing low end hardware) that this power supply is going into, it should be sufficient.

At least Solytech/Deer attempts to manufacture a decent product.

Yes, it looks passable, at least for 300W. Should be fine with upgraded electrolytics. It's worth checking out the ESR of the funky green caps. I've never heard of Anodia - maybe sister firm of Cathodia.

The fuji electronics 2sc3320's are the same primary switcher's used in the old CWT 420W (or antec 400W,) and that could run it's ratings...so you should have gotten at least 400W from it. In your review it looks like something on the opposite side of the switcher that didn't blow is what blew out, and that took out the switchers.

I know because I removed the primary switchers from a antec 400W based off the CWT-420, and it had those exact primary switchers, and they now reside in my rebuilt YueLin.

This Allied is totally dead - must be the one Oklahoma Wolf blew up! Or perhaps it has the same problems??? Will have to wait till I get some time to fix it.

Though the nichicons may have made ripple even worse, there are 2 reasons why I did this. This emachine is seldom ran and when it does it dosen't do much more than check the mail or maybe watch a youtube video. p4 2.4 with integrated video dosen't do much.

                                  1. the allied 500W reviewed on JG may have only gotten to 384W, but never got over 35mv of ripple. So I'm guessing 50mv of ripple is probalby what I am getting with these nichicons. But who knows, I don't have a oscilliscope or a load tester.

                                  2. Longevity. I don't know how trustworthy Anodia and YC caps are, so might as well replace them with something that won't blow.

The reason why I didn't get one of those fsp's is because usually fsp's don't have that good of ripple control, so it's probalby about the same thing there, and I have seen some of these new solytech's can be pretty well made so I thought for the same price and probalby the same grade of caps I can see how well made one of these new ones are. Kind of a experiment. Yes, a FSP is well built we already know that. But how nice are new solytechs? Took a gamble, and I was pleased.

So you wouldn't use a low watt fsp, hipro, delta, enermax, corsair, etc... because those too only have 2 capacitors per rail?

(i don't mean for "probably" but for the claim that fortrons have ripple issue)

btw. proof is NOT if you've found one review on jonnyguru of 700w fortron that has somewhat more ripple on particular rail.

if that circuit is indeed what it looks it is, it can blow mobo.

when you buy fortron you know you have proper +5vstby circuit.

The 300W fsp on newegg too has a two transistor 5vsb circuit, it is based on a old fsp design, with all capxon caps. I know this because we have one running a home server at a friend's house. As long as you have a good cap down there in the two transistor circuit, it is not much of a issue. I replaced that YC 50v, 47uf with a nichicon PET 50v, 47uf.

Please tell me you are not a OCZ fanboy, too? I'm not saying in a solytech fanboy, BY FAR, but I'm just saying not all FSP's are gods and can trounce any power supply they come by, because they can't hold a candle to a zippy or a delta.

As I said, it was a experiment. I wanted to see how well made a new solytech is, and it is quite well made. Done and done.
