    Antec SP-350

    Hi,

I just thought I would post info on some Antec SP-350 ATX PSU that are installed in 3 computers at work. Purchased the computers on the 14/06/2007 after about 14 months some of the computers would fail to power up from standby or boot correctly. Replacing 2 caps fixed the problem have been running for 6 months or so fine.

    Caps replaced were:

EC10: 10V 2200uf (koshin) which was vented on 2 of the computers.

EC11: 10V 1000uf (Teapo) vented on 1 computer with different Main board.

Can't remember now but I think EC10 was on the standby rail not sure about the other one.

    Re: Antec SP-350

Nearly every Antec SmartPower I've come accross has had leaking capacitors (Fuhjyyu). An LCD power supply tester shows some of the rails having well over 500mv ripple current. The 5V SB and 3.3V rails are usually the first to fail. Replacing the fuhjyyu caps with Panasonic FC, Nichicon HE or Chemi-Con KZE fixes it.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Don't forget the two 10mm diameter Fukyuu 1000uf 10V caps for the 5 volt standby they bulge too. They are directly behind the rear exhaust fan.

If you haven't replaced them yet you will soon.

I replace every Fuhjyyu, no matter how small.

The 4700uF marking on Fuhjyyu's is bogus.
As measured they are less than 3300uF even when new.

If you have problems sourcing the 3300uF-4700 uF in 10mm then use the 3300uF 10v or 3300uF 16v Samxon RS caps.
[The PX aren't really rated well enough.]
          https://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=22

It's probably okay to upgrade the 2200uF-10mm to 3300uF RS too.
I have an SP-450 in a project box that I want to use all RS-3300uF for 2200->4700uF and check the ripple with a scope but my to-do list is 12 miles long.

I usually say foo-g-u, but fuck you works just as well, as thats basically what they are saying when you buy their caps.

I got a antec smartblue 350W PSU ... Was running in a machine for a couple of year. Machine started crashing so I pulled it from the system before symptoms got really bad.

Definitely leaky capacitors on the secondary side?

Is it worth replacing the caps on this PSU, as I have friends who could use a nice, quietish PSU.

Replace -all- the Fuhjyyu and they are fine.
Better than a gutless wonder anyway.
I've seen a few that have Koshin where a Fuhjyyu usually is. Replace those too.

Most people skip the 4 and 5 mm caps and they say that works fine but that's not what I've done so I can't say.

Bulging 10V, 2200uF, 8mm diameter Koshin cap from the +5Vstandby circuit of a 350W Antec SmartPower II. Measured 7 ohms ESR. Next to it is the very slightly slimmer Sanyo WX replacement:

I saw a video once, on youtube I think, where the MD of Fuhjyyu was on about something or other (no idea what as it was all Japanese), and he pronounced it in a way that sounded remarkably like fuck-you.

I've done the same ever since.

I'm glad I replaced the smaller Koshin caps in my SP unit I had a feeling they were crap too.
