I picked up this PSU from a computer store in town today for $15. Unfortunately when I bought it home, it didn't work at all. It was dead and I got no response out of it whatsoever.
It has a warranty and all, but i decided to be adventurous and crack it open. Also voiding its warranty but I don't really mind. I found a Fuhjyuu (can't spell it) cap that wasn't bulging, but had something like electrolyte crusted around the vent on the top. So I decided to replace that with a temporary cap for now. I decided to use some "Saturn" brand 470uf 16V cap in place of the 16V 470uf Fuhyjuu cap that was leaking.
Then I discovered something else. There was a burn mark on the plastic shield that shielded the circuit shorting with the metal lining in the PSU. There also seemed to be smoke marks around the area as well.
Right where the burn mark was, was where one of the coil legs was soldered to. The solder was cracked and obviously the leg no longer touched the PCB. So I decided to resolder that and then test it. Amazingly it came to life again and the green light was on. I measured the voltage and the output is 12.233V and steady on. I bought this PSU for my LCD monitor because it was rated at 12V 5A which was plenty for my 12V 2A LCD. Anyway, the connector didn't fit the plug, so I spent a good hours worth desoldering the old plug and using another plug from my broken ADSL router.
So now everything is up and running well, so I am happy. But my question is that do I need to replace that "Saturn" brand 470uf 16V cap? or just leave it alone?
And there are two 1000uf 16V Fuhyjuu caps in there. They haven't bulged or anything, but if I don't reaplce these two and they bulge or whatever, am I going to lose my monitor due to overvoltages or whatever?
What was strange was that the store refused to sell me a similar Seasonic unit, but would only sell my the Channel Well unit. I've seen Channel Well built Antec units so I just presume they are good. And the unit does weigh a fair whack.
Thanks.
