• Re: To overload or not to overload?

Haha

Budm, I am having a similar misunderstanding about my posts in a different thread!

Behemot, you do appear to be jumping to conclusions.
And missing some well-stated points.

It's been a pleasure dealing with all present if I get canned here....

Thank you for that .pdf, Budm!

And thank you for pointing out the relevant section, 3.2.6 so as to save time.

This is exactly it and better explained than I could.

They call for a differential measurement using a 2 or more channel scope as well as using the two caps in parallel

• Re: To overload or not to overload?

If you read the whole thread, Oklahoma Wolf explains the reasoning behind the caps.

The short version is something like this.
1- The PSU is not engineered to be run without being attached to a Computer Motherboard.
2- The Motherboard is effectively part of the power supply output circuit.
3- The Motherboard needs to be simulated for accurate PSU testing.
4- The purpose of the caps is to provide this simulation.

If you are using a probe, you can wrap the leads from the caps around the probe tip...

If you're probing the ATX connector with your scope, there's something you should know.
It's right here:
http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5626

I figure you probably already know about this but if you don't your scope readings will be very inaccurate.

Большая техника???

LOLOLOL!

I like your phrase for the overly complex and have adopted it as my own.

Yes, a millivolt reading across a shunt will display Amps fairly accurately.
In the automotive trade we are used to making large current measurements and this is how our ammeters are or rather, were constructed.
Millivoltmeter across heavy shunt.

Nowadays, we generally use clamp-on.

Actually, reflectors reflect heat along with the light.

I came up with an idea for your size problem....

Instead of bulbs on the control board, just have a multi-wire connector like maybe an ATX with fairly heavy wires.

Put all of the bulbs on a separate board or box with their thermistors, attached to the control board with a multi-wire cable.

If you make it a box, you can have bulbs on 5 sides, facing all directions except down. This would allow lots of room for lamp assemblies and...

Oh! Reviews!
So you do want to compete with JohnnyGuru!
Sorry, I didn't understand the purpose of your tester.

Why not just use a bigger board?
And use complete lamp assemblies with reflectors, which would direct much of the heat away from the board and components.

Of course it would then be a really effective floodlight too.

How are you attaching your scope? I don't see any BNC connectors.

• Re: To overload or not to overload?

Neat tester, but why such high capacity?

It's not necessary to max out a PSU unless you want to compete with JohnnyGuru or blow stuff up.

You can get a good idea of ripple and voltage at 1/2 power, which is where it's likely to be operated at anyway.

Rather than use bigger bulbs, why not use more, smaller ones? One bulb per thermistor, but maybe two bulb/thermistor pairs per branch. This would be gentler on the thermistors.

I like the Thermistor/Bulb pairs that reduce the high warmup...

• Re: Re-capping eVGA GeForce 7600

Quality replacement caps are often taller than their "equivalent" cheap OEM ones.
This isn't a problem unless it's going to hit something like the case or a heatsink.
A lot of OEM caps are also too narrow for their capacity as well. Like a 10mm⌀ 4700µf/6.3v, no reputable manufacturer offers an "impossible" size. It's better to use a quality cap of lower capacity but equivalent ESR if there is no room for a larger one.

Polarity markings on the cap itself are universal- The band, stripe or mark indicates...

• Re: Using an SMPS to charge a car battery

No, people kill their car battery stone dead all the time.

Unless it freezes or sits dead for more than a week, they can usually be recharged OK.

Just not with one of these highfalutin newfangled Too-Smart-For-Its-Own-Good Smart Chargers.

And Car Batteries are Expensive nowadays!
A good one*, with high Reserve Capacity (RC) not Cold Cranking Amps, (CCA) is $100 or more and NOBODY, absolutely NOBODY wants to pay for one.
Our Customers don't want to pay.
The Factory doesn't want to...

• Re: Using an SMPS to charge a car battery

There are various "smart" car battery chargers out there that use SMPS.

They are very light for their capacity and produce much cleaner output than our traditional battery chargers.

Most of them perform a check of the battery before charging. Many will refuse to charge a completely dead battery or one that it deems "bad".
They won't even try, and so, chanting the magic spells of Auto Repair, we go trudging off to find a "real" old-fashioned charger.

We've got a pretty...

• Linksys PAP2 VOIP phone adaptor

My Vonage died!

I don't use my house phone often.
So yesterday I go to make a call... nothing. Just a little static.

So out comes the little VOIP adaptor, a Linksys PAP2 and the power light is blinking.

Check the wall adaptor, a nice steady 5.1v.

So apart comes the PAP2 and surprise! The Teapo Fairy was here!

1x Teapo SZ 470µf 16v bulged, .03Ω ESR, 42.1µf
2x Teapo SC 100µf 16v, 1 at .16Ω/89µf, 1 at 26(!)Ω/0.1µf
3x Teapo SS 10µf 35v, 1 at 0Ω/0µf,1 at ∞Ω/0.1µf,...

• Re: silence an air compressor?

Maybe suspend it from bungee cords within a box?

The box could be made of 1-1/2" thick rigid insulation or maybe 2 inch thick stuff.

The box should have a single, baffled air inlet. The baffle could just be another piece of insulation with enough space to allow air in and access for the power cord and air hose. You would overheat it with constant use, but for blowing stuff off it should be OK.

You wouldn't even need a door.... just have the top sit upon the sides which can be fastened together and attached...

Why settle for a Power Mac clone?
The real ones go for a song.

See if you can't acquire one. I'll bet you can and on the cheap too!

A BK Precision 815 component tester. It's accurate, portable, easy to use and goes from PFs to 20,000uf .. It'll cover any cap you're likely to encounter as well as resistors, diodes, LEDs, transistors... It even does a load test of 1.5 and 9v batteries.

• Re: Checking ESR and Capacitance

If you're sure of your readings, I would throw them away. How confident are you in your capacitance meters accuracy?

If the manufacturer couldn't get within 20% of the labeled value or if for some reason it changed by such a massive amount, they will probably cause trouble sooner rather than later.
