    ACBEL PC6034 blows PFC mosfet

A friend asked me if i could have a look at this PSU from his HP desktop SFF computer as a new compatible psu cost more than his old PC.
The symptoms are the computer won't start and the power on led blinks, after a visual inspection most caps need to be replaced, seemed quite straight forward, replaced the 5VSB caps first and tested if there was stand by voltage.... nope... checked the main cap and there was 0V something doesn't match with what he told me......

F1 was blown and Q4 (PFC mosfet) had all pins shorted, replaced the parts and checked for shorts, i didn't find any broken silicon so i tested again, now i had 5Vsb, decided to try if the main PSU worked... bzzzzzzz pop! F1 and Q4 were dead again, this time shorted source to drain (my fault, i should have used the lighbulb)

Time to desolder and test components:
    - Q4 is a toshiba K2698 i replaced it with an used ST W21NM50N (it has better specs and it was what i had at hand)
    - PFC diode D2 (S1TH8S06D) OK
    - main mosfet (toshiba k2611) OK
    - 5Vsb fet (AP02N90I)OK
    - PFC coil looks fine, no burn marks 1.5 Ohms and around 1830uh
    - Gate driving transistors of the PFC aren't shorted (Q7-Q9) so i guess they are OK
I have found two problematic components R2 and R14 (1w? resistors, ignore the black coating of R14)

    R2: brown-orange-silver-gold-green --> (13.8 Ohms 0.5%) reads 0.9 ohm
    R14: orange-orange-silver-gold-green -->(33.8 Ohms 0.5%) reads 1.1 Ohm

Can a wirewound resistor fail shorted or am i reading something wrong? any suggestions?

    R2: brown-orange-silver-gold-green = 0.13 Ohm
    R14: orange-orange-silver-gold-green = 0.33 Ohm
Is one of them the Source resistor for the MOSFET?
To me more likely the Gate drive circuit stuck high so the MOSFET is fully on instead of switching on and off.

Yes, it's at the source of the mosfet

Tomorrow i will desolder Q7 and Q9 and test them out of circuit.

I have checked Q7 and Q9 and they are OK, finally my friend has decided to buy a new computer as this one is quite old and the motherboard caps need to be replaced too, so there's no need to fix this PSU anymore. I might try to fix it just for curiosity if i get the old parts

Try replacing the red capacitor in the photo above.

Is it part of the PFC circuit?

replace all capacitors .. unless that pic is not of your board ..
quick count i see 6 have popped the tops .

this is something that usually make me headache..
              Shorted mosfet..
Measure all components surround, but it seems all okay..
              Replace the mosfet..
              And, suddenly "bang" again.

For this case, i usually replace all (for the component i have the backup components) diode, bulk caps, all ceramic caps and retest all resistor.

Somehow, a component can perfectly well if we measure it in non voltage condition, but fail if we apply voltage..

                ring that pfc choke.
                shorted turns=BANG!

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
                  by Jane
I tried to use this method:

                  Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

VGA MOSfet permanently shorted and loss of MOSfet pad
                  by Nooy
Hello everyone, I recently found this badcaps site and super Learn Electronics Repair youtube channel. And I wanted to learn how to troubleshoot power supplies and VGA cards and how to practice soldering, since I already have a properly defective piece of them. I am currently trying to solve two problems:

I have a Gigabyte GV-RX460WF2OC-4GD type card. I managed to find the faulty MOSfet (AON6414A) on it, which I replaced. The card starts up, but after about half a minute, the MOSfet in the same position will be shorted again. Is it possible that the PWM controller driving the MOSfet...

Asus X712EA 3 volts after the first mosfet
                  by AppleLover123
                  Hey guys,

i have a asus motherboard here and as the title says after the first mosfet (in the picture) there is nothing more than 3.15v.
I injected 19v and max. 1 amp at the charging port and there is not voltage drop or smth. It's just taking 19v and 1 milliamp.
Then i tried to inject 19v and max 1amp after the current sensor and there it first takes 19v and 4 milliamps and after 2 seconds it is taking nothing (no current).
I measured on the coils on board everything seems fine. Also the main power rail is not shorted (infinite resistance).
                  Now i thought something...

ASUS ROG Zephyrus GPU Mosfet repeat failure
                  by MicroSMD Lab
The board number is GU502DU. I repaired this a couple weeks ago and it came back with the same issue, same mosfet failed (PQH9201). I'm hoping that the GPU was spared this time.
I used the same replacement part (purchased from Mouser) and I'm certain the soldering was done properly since it took just as much effort to remove as before. What could cause this same mosfet to fail? I'm thinking if it was unsuitable then the others would fail too. I looked for similar failures on YTube and the mosfet was replaced with AOE6930 in one instance and AOE6932 in the other but it's possible that the...

                  Asus GA502D keeps blowing mosfet
                  by Scotchmist
I have an Asus GA502D, it had a blown mosfet which I replaced and the laptop booted into windows, a few mins later it shut off, the same mosfet was blown. I thought maybe just a bad mosfet but same thing happened again, a few mins in windows and shuts off.

I have removed the mosfet and can run the laptop no problem

                  The MOSFET is FDPC5018SG

Can anyone point me in the direction of what could be the cause of this, could it be the controller rt3663bc?

                  Thanks
