Re: Another Deer In the Crosshairs

@ starfury: the P3V4X is an Asus mobo based on the Via Apollo Pro133 chipset, not on the Intel 440BX one; the review states the Apollo has a 1:2 Agp divider while the BX doesn't.

@ i4004: the page you linked doesn't state this board has a 1:2 divider
Although the BX chipset is an old chipset, ABIT has made inroads into the market with many innovative products like the BE6-II v1.1 with onboard Highpoint ATA-66 and 1Mhz FSB stepping for the overclockers and just recently, the BE6-II v1.2 with onboard HPT370 (RAID) and ATA-100 support with 1Mhz FSB increments was released to the public. Now with the BX133-RAID coming out into the market, there is the question of: "Why make another BX board that is based on the BX chipset when i815e chipset is already available and has ATA-100 support ?"

Apparently, many people still have the notion that the 440BX chipset is the way to go due to the stability of the system and the maturity of the chipset, whereas the i815/e boards are fledglings in the market and have yet to prove their worth to the masses. ABIT certainly thinks so because the 440BX chipset was never meant to be run at 133mhz but, as overclockers are, we managed to find out that at 133mhz, the system and its components are able to run at that speed. The only problem that the 440BX encountered was the fact that when it was released more than 2 years ago, AGP graphics cards were not inclined to run at such high speeds (i.e. If FSB is at 133mhz, AGP clock will be 2/3 = 89mhz) due to their intolerance of it (89mhz). But now, as it turned out, most if not all of the newer graphics card can run at 89mhz or even higher, thus the obstacle of 133mhz FSB is overcomed.
So it simply states that overclocked Agp bus isn't an issue for recent (at review time) graphic cards.

Two pages later it is absolutely clear:

AGP Clock: This controls the stability of your AGP card. For best performance, 66mhz for the AGP card is the optimum but there are 2 choices that you can choose from, 1/1 and 2/3, whichever helps you attain a speed that is closest to 66mhz.
The bios hasn't a setting for 1:2 Agp divider and the reason is simple: the 440 BX is a chipset based on a single clock source, the Front Side Bus (FSB) clock; other fequencies are derived from the FSB through dividers and these dividers are silicon circuit inside the chipset. Since engineers never planned the BX for 133 MHz FSBs (at the time 100 MHz was new), the 1:2 divider was never designed: this is a lack you can't overcome, your brother's Abit is capable of running at 133 MHz fsb if the graphic card tolerates an out-of-spec Agp bus.

The BX was the last one based on a single clock: later chipsets, such as Intel 810-815 and Via Apollo Pro133 & Pro133A, have multiple clock sources and completely different designs since they were developed for FSB at 133 MHz.

I think jonnyguru was deceived by some advertising or comparisons: both the Apollo Pro133 and Intel 815 were credited as BX heirs because had performance comparable or slightly inferior to a 133 MHz clocked BX, but could address properly the Agp bus and the disk subsystem was a bit faster too. The common phrase in reviews was: "The Via is slightly inferior to the overclocked BX but at least has a 1/2 Agp divider"

There is a guy claiming Gigabyte did build a BX mobo capable of 133/66 but he never stated which model was and I found no other reference: I think he was confused too, because an updated BX was the ideal chipset at time and every enthusiast would have reviewed and bought such a motherboard. Quite hard to believe nobody advertised this.

for some reason i thought 133 was contested here.

Don't worry, I'm not mad to anyone.
This is more an academic debate than else; anyway I still wonder what model is bgavin's board.

so sorry again for superficial reading on my behalf.

yeah I didn't make that clear,
sorry bout that I should have...
as it does "miss read "as if it was a BX based MB which it isn't

it was really for the BX ref

just found mention of BX in it.

and in your post you said

All right, but 133/66 boards aren't based on the BX: they employ other chipsets.
so it was partly with ref to that (partly supporting what you had said)

found a comparison link so put that in

and my final comment was that maybe it was done....like I said I don't know
(maybe there was an BX MB that was moddable ...thats if it can be done)

on the fairly quick searching I did I didn't turn up anything conclusive to support JG comment.

              (based on what JG mentioned
he recalled some later (last) BX MB doing something along those lines.)

I know we can all make mistakes and possibly mis recall something but I also know JG has been around the traps for a fair while
so if something is twigging in his memory there would be some basis in it.
(even if not specifically accurate recall.)
This is why I went searching, to see if I could find a possible answer on it

still what I posted did need to be stated clearly so thanks for that Zandrax

I don't fully appreciate the technical aspects to the discussion
so I guess it was a somewhat poor attempt to help clarify an answer on it

              Cheers

(what little I did know is now long forgotten, I guess...that was about the period when I did look into Ocing in a big way but thats as far as it went)

My long quotes are long because I want only to make the point, not to bore or attack someone: anyway I always ask myself if a reader reading my posts can detect and understand my emotions, my feeling; smileys help a bit.
That's the reason I make clear I'm not mad: to err is human and I like to interact with humans, not with computers

                    looks like it
it has gone off topic by a wide margin
(and yes I stand accused of it too )

just cause a MB is connected to a psu (hopefully not a Deer)
                    doesn't mean its related

why don't we have the pic of this deer so we can attempt to dissect what went wrong?
to employ some of the stuff davmax and i discussed....

but something tells me bgavin doesn't check too often on threads he participates in(?).

I tore up my left should rotator cuff shortly after posting this thread. I was preoccupied with sitting on the couch, screaming and taking handfuls ibuprofen and vicadin, so I didn't bother reading the boards.

The DEER was a tosser, with bulging caps. The board was a Soyo 6BA+IV. It was living in a system owned by a nice little old lady who really liked it. And then it killed her system. I was really disgusted with it, and just threw it out.
