I am attempting to repair a friends computer, Emachines model: T2865. The motherboard is an AU31 connected to a Bestec 250W powersupply and an AMD athlon 2800 processor. The computer would randomly shut down and power off during use, and one day just died. Now it does not post boot, the CPU and PSU fan spins immediatly when power is applied and the machine wont respond to the power button on the front whatsoever. I read a couple posts here where people have had the same problem, but didn't know what they did to resolve it. Any ideas to get started?

Re: AU31 Motherboard with Bestec 250W PSU is toast
Have you looked at motherboard and inside PSU for bad caps?
Have you checked the bios backup battery? Check for low voltage and remove it for a minute or two then replace. The latter will refresh the bios that may be corrupted and prevent boot.Gigabyte EP45-DS3L Ultra Reliable (Power saver)

I've actually seen several of these boards killed by the bestec's. Look very carefully at the southbridge and check for scorch marks or divots. Good Luck!Comment

Re: AU31 Motherboard with Bestec 250W PSU is toast
Those DFI boards were pretty good, and if it has survived, you should probably recap it if it has OSTs or similar crap caps. The Bestec PSUs are known mobo killers - I'd probably recap and reserve them for non-critical use on legacy low-power systems (P2/P3 etc.), definitely not heavy-duty, heavy-load use.Comment

Re: AU31 Motherboard with Bestec 250W PSU is toast
yes it is a fic. i tried a new power supply with no sucess. also tried clearing the CMOS like mentioned above...nothing. I don't see any bulging caps or anything physically out of the ordinary. I think im going to try recapping the whole thing, i have nothing to loose. just wondering if theres a specific Cap that is known to go first or something else i should check for this model.Comment

Re: AU31 Motherboard with Bestec 250W PSU is toast
Last chance maybe. I recommended removing the battery to reset bios, this does not always work because a capacitor is used to hold charge whilst changing the battery. The only sure way to reset the bios is to locate the bios reset jumper. It has three pins and usually labelled CMOS. There are two possibilities 1.that the jumper has been left in the wrong position and 2. bios is still corrupted. First with power off move the jumper to the alternate position for about 15 sec then move back and apply power to check for change. If nothing remove power and move jumper to the 15 sec position and try power again.
DO you have a mainboard manual? this should indicate CMOS jumper and the correct running position.Last edited by davmax; 02-04-2008, 04:20 PM.Gigabyte EP45-DS3L Ultra Reliable (Power saver)

Ditto on looking at the southbridge chip very carefully. Look for a dent, bubble, or black spot.Comment

by glovecapsHello,
I have a Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (G533QM) that had a dead motherboard (Graphics card dead) and after trying to fix the motherboard with no success, I bit the bullet on a sale for a new motherboard. I ordered a motherboard for the 15 inch model which is the one that I have, and when the motherboard arrived it wasn't for a little while that I saw it was from the 17 inch model.
My question is, can I update the Bios on this G733 motherboard to a G533 Bios.
The reason for wanting to do this is that the keyboard isn't working as it should, and I think this... -
by DocusHi everyone 😀,
I'm here today to ask for help with repairing the motherboard of a Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH.
To give you some context, I'm passionate about computer repair so much so that I've invested in a lot of tools and started practicing on dead and old hardware. I've been learning how to solder and desolder components, mostly focusing on phone repairs.
Recently, I bought a broken Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH for just €150, and there are two main reasons why I made this purchase:- I already own the exact same model, but its plastic chassis is badly damaged.

by ArchimedesSubject is a blank screen issue in HP Envy 17-3290NR 3D version laptop with motherboard Louis V1.1 6050A2489901 MB-A02. Production year is 2012. This one is a 2nd hand motherboard which I could use it for few months only. Suddenly no output from the internal display and also no signal from HDMI port then Windows out of order after few boots.
Caps lock working normally and no HP's caps-lock warning blinks. Making a hard reset and replacing the RAM sticks or using different slots didn't help.
Fans are spinning. Blindly could install windows11 and got the device manager... -
by momakaHere’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.
So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

by dragon3xHi, I have some 32 bits computer motherboards that need repair, as they fail to
power on.
Here are some examples :
(N.B. "capacitors" indicated here are electrolytic capacitors located in the onboard
switching supply area).
(N.B. #2 : I could not find a 3300 microF aluminum-polymer with a higher voltage
than 6.3 V.)
1 - Motherboard #1 : this is an Asrock K7VT2 (socket A) that still works well. To put it on test
I replaced capacitors with aluminum-polymer.
