It was the disk. I've just cloned the system partition to a Seagate Cheetah 15K.5 and the system is MUCH more responsive. Will move installations to second partition on the drive and defragment. The older UATA drive will we kept for data. I would use more of the drives, I have several 10k here but no room in case and I don't want to do any gheto moding. And cannot swap the case easily as I need XP sticker to at least make impression of being genuine licensed

I suggest everybody to sell old slow drives and use 10k or better 15k drives. Or SSD. But you can get old SCSi 15k drives for laughable money these days from old ditched server stuff while reasonably-fast SSD are still pricey.
