    Re: Sumvision KY-450ATX 350W P4 PSU - recapped

It was the disk. I've just cloned the system partition to a Seagate Cheetah 15K.5 and the system is MUCH more responsive. Will move installations to second partition on the drive and defragment. The older UATA drive will we kept for data. I would use more of the drives, I have several 10k here but no room in case and I don't want to do any gheto moding. And cannot swap the case easily as I need XP sticker to at least make impression of being genuine licensed (it's in a shop)

I suggest everybody to sell old slow drives and use 10k or better 15k drives. Or SSD. But you can get old SCSi 15k drives for laughable money these days from old ditched server stuff while reasonably-fast SSD are still pricey.

My Athlon XP rig runs fast because while I have Windows 7's bootloader on the second drive (PATA Maxtor 6L040P0) the actual system boots from the first HDD. (SATA WDC WD800JD connected to Silicon Image Sil3112 SATA/RAID controller). This is why I said my Athlon XP 2500+ runs 7 fast. (that 80gb drive runs fast even on a i865 motherboard, been there done that)

However I'm thinking of retiring the 80GB SATA HDD and getting a bigger one.
      Main rig:
      Gigabyte B75M-D3H
      Core i5-3470 3.60GHz
      Gigabyte Geforce GTX650 1GB GDDR5
      16GB DDR3-1600
      Samsung SH-224AB DVD-RW
      FSP Bluestorm II 500W (recapped)
      120GB ADATA + 2x Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST31000340NS 1TB

That is somewhat faster but you are still limited by seek. Compared to relatively new Seagate ST3802110A, the ST373455LC on overclocked PCI bus has twice the R/W speed while having 1/3 seek times. That is HUGE difference.

The PCI bus on 865PE chipset is fastest I have seen so far (109 MB/s stock) but still limits the drive. After overclocking to 37 MHz I now have speed of up to 119 MB/s, the drive itself is probably capable of some around 125 MB/s.

Usually, only Maxtor HDDs can get more than 100 MB/s for interface speed on PATA.

While OTOH on SATA, my 500 GB Seagate Barracudas easily get 125 MB/s for the real deal platter speed!

RAID 0 on 500 GB Barracudas easily gets 250 MB/s

That's for expensive 500GB drive and TBH, you don't need 500 gigs for system. And than making partitions on it, that makes the speed go doww toilet again. I have learnt having separate physical drive for system is much more effective.

This 15k 73GB drive costs fraction of new 500GB drive and has average seek of 6 ms. You can get SCSi controllers almost for free, maybe cables cost something (but still fraction of original price which used to be INSANE). These SATA drives usually have around 12 ms best.

              Re: Sumvision KY-450ATX 350W P4 PSU - recapped

I thought of starting a series named "It's so cheap it's actually good" in which I take cheap/fried/bloated PSUs (Deer, lower end Sun Pro and any cheap PSU EXCEPT Leadman/Powmax,those are simply useless)and get them to be at least good for something. All of this just for fun of course, and also for use in systems.

Here is a list of what I've got planned for next week. Note that I've started with the unit in this thread.

1.Sumvision KY-450ATX 350W - as described in this thread, replaced caps and completed input filtering. (it has a copper choke as opposed to the ones with wires instead of copper)
              2. Generic Deer/L&C - this one is gonna get new caps, some PI coils (salvaged from a dead 180W Delta very likely) and a powerful fan running on 12V. BTW,I don't even care Deer uses fake transfomers, however most of them I've found were correctly labeled with EI-33ASG.
              3. Powerlink 400w - Linkworld, yet to decide what I'm going to do with it.
              Main rig:
              Gigabyte B75M-D3H
              Core i5-3470 3.60GHz
              Gigabyte Geforce GTX650 1GB GDDR5

Yeah, people did that before here. It's just not under a unified thread. But there are some "good examples" if you dig deeper in the PSU subforum (look for posts by Newbie2, 370forlife, and a few other names I can't remember right now - they did some cool PSU rebuilds).

"HD" is a relative term here. Compression, and like you mentioned before, resolution matter.

But here is what gets me: video from "older" compression formats could play just fine in a high resolution, even on very old computers. I mean I have some 720p DivX/Xvid-compressed AVI videos, and I can run those even on a slow 800 MHz P3 CPU all day any day. Online/Flash - can't even do 240p without terrible stutter on same computers - at least not within FP. With VLC, it's not a problem. So where exactly is the technological progress here? The way I see it, Flash just sucks.

Anyways, I think I'll stop polluting the thread with that talk now .

                No color printer around you?
Cause otherwise you just take a good picture of that original sticker, and print a few copies out of it. Then just glue them on whatever case you want .

Gotta be careful with that. 10k and 15k drives can be rather loud, especially if you get something old with ball bearings (ugh!). I have a 73 GB Maxtor Atlas IV like that and it's quite annoying. Sounds like a jet engine when it spins up. Also needs a fan for cooling in the summer months. My Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 and ATA IV drives, on the other hand are plenty fast for what I do, quiet, and they can take the hot summer temperatures in my room.
Also, for those 10k and 15k drives, you also gotta make sure you have a decent PSU. They can pull 2-3A of current on spin-up. Definitely not something you want to try with a crappy PSU.

                Agree there.
And if you want to get even cheaper drives, try SCA. I got 6 drives for $1. Two of them are 300 GB Seagate Cheetah 10ks. Would have been even better deal if the guy selling them was local (I had to pay $12 for shipping).
SCA is compatible with SCSI with an adapter, which are also not that expensive (under $5/adapter on eBay). I bought two of them. Still waiting for them to arrive on the slow boat from China, though .

Those are probably peak speeds, which no one really should care about. Seek time is by far the most important factor. Do a speed test with HDTune and see what you get for the average speed. I bet it will be much lower.

It was HD Tune, what else? Avera was over 100 MB/s with OC'ed bus, before that it was somewhat under 90 MB/s. SCA is SCSi for me of course, even this ST373455LC has SCA (you haven't checked, nasty boy )

On the contrary, I like them very much. So far absolutelly most quiet, IBM/Fujitsu are nosiy and Fujitsu together with Seagate drives is crapping my system, making it stall for as long as a minute even though the Fujitsu drive itself is OK (S.M.A.R.T. checks fine, R/W is OK), With Cheetahs only, everything works fine. I have 3 drives on single cable in my system, ID 0, 1, 2.

maybe you should check the jumpers to see if they are all sync or async transfer.

That'a automatic on the controller…and there are no jumpers on the drive. But it is Toshiba, not Fujitsu But even than, all Fujitsu drives I had were very loud…but I must admit they were old.

if they are SCA there should be jumpers on the adapter.

Yeah jumpers for ID. Not sure if for sync or not, but I used same adapter so the settings remained the same for both Seagate and Toshiba.

well if you have more than 1 drive you need async or drive-0 will hog all the bandwidth.

The drive with OS is ID 0 so even if it was the problem, it should not stall the system. Other drives contain program installation and games installation. The latter one was the drive making problems.
