looks like most ICs have some marker / dots on them. I took some photos below. I wish I were 20 years old.. no, this 50 plus can hear it. Seems to change with frequency output - I hear it most prominent at 650 Hz and up.. as you change the output frequency, it's like you're playing a musical instrument.

Look at the tab of Q1301 and Q1302 and some other components around that area... almost like Agilent was saving on solder?

Well, this is a bit anti climactic / bitter sweet - so I had taken the transformer off the board to replace it - a replacement is not available, this is custom transformer specifically made for Agilent. In order to get the plots R_J asked for, I soldered it back on, and miraculously the audible noise seems to have disappeared! I still got the scope captures at the output pins of the transformer, reference to pin 8 of the transformer "ACOM"
Seems to have been solder joint issue? Does anyone have other suggestions? Thank you for the help folks - great team as always. hover over the plots below as the name indicates where it was taken

          a fix is a fix.
in the old days we used to resolder all transformers and heatsink-mounted parts before even thinking about the fault.
          cracked solder was that common

Yes! That could have been an issue! Just not enough solder and with all these years of heating and cooling or a little corrosion they can cause weird issues. Basically anything that gets hot and the transformer. Just about the same we used to treat old stubborn TV’s. Call it a win! To me it just really looked liked Agilent was skimping on solder. My next step would have been to resolder all these components with 60/40 solder and see what that gives.

Not too late, I can still do that.. Thank you all for the help

Removing electrical noise introduced by fan
                  by tony359
                  Hi all,

I am working on a sound processor, it tends to overheat so I fitted a fan inside. The fan is connected to the +15V of the PSU via a DC-DC converter based on the LM2596 to reduce the voltage to around 10.5V.

Unfortunately the analogue circuitry is picking up the noise from the fan in two ways:
                  1. The fan is close to the analogue section, the motor itself gets into the outputs so I'll have to move it somewhere else
                  2. Even with the fan running outside of the case, there is still some noise which is clearly going back to the processor via power line....

Square wave (from a function generator) Vs a pulse generator
                  by Nevillet
                  Hi All,

Can someone please explain the difference between a 1kH square waveform with a 50% duty cycle and a similar waveform from a pulse generator?

                  Many thanks,

Onkyo TX-SR805 noise in one channel
                  by MegaZAC
Surprisingly enough, this receiver doesn't have the DSP chip issue. The HDMI board does not get hot, and sound over HDMI works fine.

Regardless of the input, the right channel has noise that is clearly noticeable even on average volume level. The only cases when there's no noise is when VCR input is selected (some tracks on the board are damaged, maybe that's why), or if HDMI input is selected but nothing plugged into it. In all other cases, even when no input is connected I still have the noise.

There's some logic behind it. As soon as I select an input I get only left...

                  Function Signal Generator Some Questions...
                  by SolomonMan
                  All,
I have been collecting/purchasing equipment as I go along my "Electronics Journey". Thanks for all those who have helped me on this Journey and have educated me... I really appreciate this guidance!

Also the fixing of many of my household finds have kept the wife happy as well as I buy said new electronic equipment.

I have read and heard that every electronics workshop should have a Function Signal Generator or more than one.

As I barely understand the use of such a piece of equipment can someone educate me first on what this...

Philips HTS8000 home cinema noise problem
                  by courtcircuit
                  Hello

I have since a long time a Philips HTS8010S/01 which has been old but was doing the job.

Since a few days, it starts by making a weird "static" nois when switches on for a few seconds to a minute and then works like a charm.
Noise loudly outputs from the 3 channels, even if no signal is sent by the controler.DVD to the subwoofer/amp unit.

I was thinking of a soldering that was starting to be damaged and that was only doing the job after a few seconds of heating, most probbaly on the power board
                  Removed each of tyhe boards
                  ...
