  • BK Precision 2910 R/C Pak...

    All,
Picked up one of these the other day from a Swap sale.

How would one test this unit? Would using a multimeter and going thru every possible value be the method?

These have electrolytic capacitors in them according to my research...so not sure if they are problematic.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Chris

  • STJ,
    Thanks for the information!

I have ordered the BNC to double 4mm jack adapter and the p6100 Probes. I also did a bunch of other shopping as well.

It is supposed to arrive before Christmas.

I will let you know the outcome,

    Thanks again,
    Chris

  • Vintage BK Precision 1403 Oscilloscope....

    All,

Some of you have helped me in the past and I am very appreciative of all the help! (I have fixed TVs/Stereos/ and other small appliances with your efforts...Thanks so much!!!

Today I went to a local HAM Radio Festival. It was one of the smaller ones in our area. My stepfather is the HAM operator. I tinker in electronics but am a Software Programmer (27 years now).

I was looking for a few odds and ends for some electronics work I have to do for the household/farm. Typically these type of shows have the grab bags or a electronics vendor...

  • Re: Electric Motor Question....

    All,
    I went a little deeper into the motor;

sam_sam_sam, as asked the resistance of the Capacitor wires (without the capacitor involved) is 74.4 ohms.

Next I made a Table of wires Resistance between the remaining 4 wires.

Remember the wire colors I mentioned previously in the image I pulled from YouTube do not represent my motor but the wiring setup is identical. I updated that previous image to represent the actual colors now and included it with the latest posting.

    I included...

  • Re: Electric Motor Question....

    Everyone,
The way this Fan quit was quite odd.

Running Fine in the morning and nothing by afternoon...So I started asking the kids if they knew anything.

My oldest daughter said she was sweeping the hallway and pulled the plug from the surge protector to plug in the sweeper. The surge protector hosts the TV, Blu Ray, Phone charger and bedroom lamps. We commonly unplug the fan or lamp for the weekly bedroom sweeps.

She said she plugged in the fan after she swept and heard the fan spin up.

    So...

    CapLeaker,
Confirmed the wiring and even tried spinning the motor by hand to give it a head start. I assume the Capacitor is a starting Capacitor for the motor?

The Capacitor is 250V 12 MicroFarad Capacitor (Box Capacitor).

    Thanks,
    Chris...

  • Electric Motor Question....

    All,
Yesterday in the morning the fan was fine. Its approximately 10 years old. Its one of those high Velocity types.

In the afternoon I noticed it was not running any longer.

    During the investigation, I confirmed the wiring, confirmed the 3 way switch is fine, the Capacitor measures the correct Microfarads. So I went to the Motor;

No smell of burnt and it spins very easily. I started to measured the continuity between the 6 wires.

I have included a diagram from a YouTube video I found but basically the wiring is identical. The only exception...

  • Re: Antenna...

    All,
I have been happy with all my Wineguards over the years. Have had 3 total. We had a Channel Master and it came apart when it was up the tower about 3 years in.

Its kind of funny as I actually have a fairly unused Wineguard model of the exact same unit that was mounted to this house originally. I used it for our seasonal camping site for the camper we have, and actually this spring will be selling, as we purchased a used (in the family) Class C Camper. It will not need this antenna as it has a very decent antenna on it.

    So...

    started a topic Antenna...

    Antenna...

    All,
I recently moved to a very rural area. I am about 25 miles from the nearest urban settings (2 separate College Towns). 45-50 miles from a Urban City (Toledo Ohio)

There was a Omni-directional Wineguard Antenna (amplified) that was mounted on the house originally. Came with the house. Center of the top of Roof a few feet from Chimney on a 4 foot pole. The 75 ohm line went from the roof down 2-3 stories to the small Wineguard amplifier and then it split to the living room and master bedroom. Currently a Very simple setup.

Since we moved in, 8 years ago,...

  • Re: HP Docking Stations Power Supplies...?

    Stj,
I wonder about the connectors myself and the docking plug.

They appear to fit snug, the center is a single pin and both sides look good.

The outside of the PSU connector is 4.5 mm.

The inside on the Docking station has three points of contact that the PSU connector would make contact.

I am wondering if there is possibly not enough amperage coming out which I would have to put my DMM in circuit and unfortunately I do not have the proper connector to the docking station...I...

  • Re: HP Docking Stations Power Supplies...?

    All,
    Its a 120 Watt PSU 19.5V 6.15 amps.

Its 90 degree 4.5mm blue tipped end.

So today I decided to send the PSUs back to Amazon and have them replace them.

I got my scope out and looked at the connector on the docks. They are clean and solid and not pushed in and I believe it would be hard to actually damage as its a 90 degree design. In both docks they look fine.

So I got out my multimeter. I measured the voltage at the PSU connector end. It measure 20.06 on the PSUs from...

  • Re: HP Docking Stations Power Supplies...?

    All,
Typically I would buy a HP one but actually the HP one appears to be made by Lite On. So its actually relabeled.

Unfortunately the HP PSU used is more than double the cost of the after market. Not to mention more than what I bought the Docks for originally.

The reviews were actually good on the aftermarket PSU.

With that said, the connector issue could make some sense.

    Thanks,
    Chris

  • HP Docking Stations Power Supplies...?

    All,
I recently purchased for a colleague and myself two used HP Docking Stations. They are for home use and are exact model as the ones we use at work for our laptops. We are both Software Developers.

Anyways these docks are HP Model 5TW10UT#ABA.

Unfortunately they did not come with there Power supplies (PSU) and I got them reasonable from eBay.

I purchased 2 new from Amazon After Market Power Supplies(PSU). Same Voltage and Same Amperage and in fact it mentions on the Amazon page they are supported for these docks as well.

  • Re: A Couple Quick Battery Questions...

    All,
Well I ordered a single battery. I was going to buy more than one at this time but other priorities (Birthday/medical) got in the way.

Anyways on the check out for 3 bucks I could of added a 2 year insurance warranty.

I have done this 2 items...one worked in favor for me. The other time I have not had a issue with it....so another thing to keep in mind I guess.

I will let you know what I find in the old battery and how the new one works.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Funny you should mention this...

During the Covid pandemic I order a replacement set of M18 Batteries for my Milwaukee shop drills. If anyone knows of these you will know these are not exactly cheap.

Anyways I bought 3. One OEM. Two knock offs as a test. All From memory had 5 year warranties on them. Of course the knock offs were half as much.

A year abouts go by. My one knock off battery no longer takes a charge. Its dead. All the other batteries I have (6) charge fine. So I reach back...

Unfortunately the OEM battery...looking across the web is easily 5 times the cost. And I actually used these machines originally for development...3-5 years was max...3 years things really seemed to degrade with the OEM batteries.

So If I plan to go past 3 years with these laptops (possible) then plan for the batteries to be replaced

    Thanks,
    Chris...

    Sam_Sam_Sam,
    Thanks for the reply!

It appears the fellow on ebay has been selling on it since 2016. Also he has close to 78000 rating. His percentage is 99.1%.

His 7 negative out of 1455 in the past month, all of buyers feedback are under 200 and most of those are actually under 75 (new basically).

I thought about rebuilding them but honestly once you figure in the cost of batteries and the risk of the charging board not working (saw that on youtube video provided previously...

    Thanks for the replies!

So from the sounds the warranty and who you buy it from may help make the final decision as well.

I know on the Drill battery cells, 18650 Lithium Ion batteries seem to be a very popular choice.

Individually at the HAM/Computer Festivals these are popular and not pricey...the price online also reflect this as well. I believe for example the name brand (Sony) ones typically ran a dollar more and individual price was reasonable few bucks tops. Less if...

  • A Couple Quick Battery Questions...

    All,
I have 4 laptops all the same HP Elitebook model. These are now close to 8-10 years old now but they all were high end software development machines (ie 16GB ram (32 max) and all now have been upgraded to 1TB SSD). They are used throughout my house (family).

I recently bought a Software Defined Radio setup (SDR) and I will use it with one of the laptops but the batteries appear to be all dead.

The replacements seem reasonable at the sub $30 range (some as low as $20 shipped).

So I am thinking of replacing them all.

    So the question...
