Re: Weird issue with HEC Orion PSU

I wonder if the output caps could be faked too. Wouldn't surprise me if HEC sourced them from the same supplier as the primaries.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

I will check all of those caps after I pull them. They look pretty genuine but then again, so do those primaries

        Those caps were unusually small.

Yeah, pretty small. And they're very light!

after you fixed the transistor, is the primary heatsink getting as hot as before?

^ No, it is not as hot as before, but still pretty warm

Re: Weird issue with HEC Orion PSU

It looks so much better now added 2 X caps (Both 0.47uF), 2 Y caps, and 2 coils for the input filtering.

Added a much larger 6A bridge rectifier, replaced those Teapo caps with those 680uF OST caps

Replaced all of the secondary caps. The 12V only had a single 2200uF cap and no inductor (But it has one on all the other rails....) so I put in a 3300uF KY cap, I'm hoping that will lower the ripple a little bit. The 3300uF KY cap has 1,100 more rated ripple current than the 2200uF Teapo SC. All the voltages look good, and it's been powering a hungry P4 system for a while now

Edit: All the Teapo secondary caps were in spec, but there was one SEK (GP) which had pretty high ESR

Didn't it originally have an 8A bridge without a heatsink? The one in the review did (GBU806 by Lite-on semiconductor).

Not mine, it had a wimpy GBL406

Looks nice and beefy now. Good job!

Only that minimum load resistor on the 5VSB bugs me a little bit, but it looks like a 47 Ohm one, so it shouldn't be that bad. It's dissipating about 0.5W of power. If it was any higher, I would have changed it.

Thanks man! Oh that one next to the 5VSB transistor? Can't believe I checked for those on the secondary but not for the 5VSB...I will remove it

Wait, is yours 27 or 47 Ohms? I just opened my Thermaltake TR 430W for the first time yesterday, and mine has a 27 Ohm load resistor for the 5VSB.

If it's 47 Ohms, it's dissipating about 0.53W, which isn't too terrible and you can probably leave it there. But mine is dissipating nearly 1W of power in Stand by - that's quite a bit too much. Enough to cook caps for sure.

I believe it was 47. Not to worry though, I put it in my Linux server so it's been running 24/7 since the first week of June Since the standby is so inefficient I figured it would be good to throw it in something that would be running 24/7. Although man it is already pretty dusty because we have pets in the house and those two 80mm fans sure move a lot of air

Sounds good. Just keep an eye on that 5VSB voltage every now and then. This design DOES have a critical cap that can make the 5VSB sky-rocket. If it's still the original Su'scon (or whatever other crap HEC decided to use), it's only a matter of when it will fail, not IF.

momaka you should know me by now, I don't let those stay I replaced the critical cap with a Panny FC. All the caps are Japanese except the OST on the input

You know, it crossed my mind that you did, and you probably posted about it as well. I just didn't feel like reading over the last page again . So I thought I better mention it and be safe anyways .
