How to recap antec psus???

i just recieved (free) about 10 antec smart/true power power supplies. all withbloated fuhjyyus. how the hell am i supposed to get under that heatsink???
some onclude:

-antec true 550w
-antec true 480w
-2x antec true 380w
-antec smartpower 450w
-antec smartpower 350w

and more, but these i could list off the top of my head. they are heavy, high-qulity power supplies. except for the fuhjyyu caps.

why does one have 2 panasonic [m] caps and one is BLOATED???
does it need to be replaced?

With a big soldering iron and a desolder pump aka solder sucker. Remove heatsink along with attached parts (do it all at once, don't bother removing the semiconductors off it), do your job, put heatsink back.

25w should be enough to do that.

the truepower are the best ones btw.
and you will probably feel the temptation to resolder every damned joint and trim all the leads on the smartpower!

I always manage to get at the caps with the heatsink still in place (well, I do on the smartpowers. I've never even seen a truepower before, let alone opened and re-capped one).

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

I fanmod the true power and the smart power psus because they get REALLY HOT and that can cause problems such as this and this let alone the bulging caps.

Yeap, it's not so difficult.

I have recapped my antec truepower 2.0 380w without removing anything but the caps.

It depends on the model.

You have to find the thermal sensor, that is usually touching the secondary heatsink.

The thermal sensor is a variable resistor that changes with the temperature. If the sensor is an NTC then you can mod it by putting a resistor in paraller with it.

can i just bypass the thermal sensor? like just solder the fan wires onto one of the 12v wires?

follow the fan wires back to the board,
one wire will pass through a transistor.
remove that transistor and put a link between the emitter and collector holes.

ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard recap

Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

Testing ATX PSUs under load - Does loading the ATX 24 pin also load EPS & PCIE?

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to clear up a misunderstanding of mine (or what I expect is one). Isn't the 12V rail from the 24 pin, EPS and PCIE separated? IE if I put a power resistor on the ATX 12V pin that is not going to load, thus tell me if the EPS or PCIE rails are fine?

I was recently watching ArIs from Hardware Busters video on how to properly test ATX PSUs without using 5 figure Croma substations.

The PCB adapter he used breaks out the 12, 5 and 3.3V pins from the 24 pin and gives you banana plugs to connect to. That is a bit useless is it not? Aren't...

no-name Radeon 9600 XT recap and cooler

I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

i can't find schematic or boardview
no short on motherboard
19v stop on source of pq2 drain=0v
on the gate of pq1 and pq2 =18.5v qnd source 19v but pq1 and pq2 qre pchannel which is means the source voltage should be lower
what i know is gate of pq1 and pq2 controlled by charger ic here is bq24780s but vcc of bq=0v which means ther is somthing else controlling mosfet gate
i think kbc IT8987E is controll the gates of both...

Looking for someone to recap Dell XPS T450 motherboard (Live in suburbs outside of Philly)

Hi guys,

I’m looking for someone in the Northeast to do a full electrolytic capacitor recap on a working Dell Dimension XPS T450 motherboard (it's an Intel 440BX, Slot 1). The board runs mostly fine but is beginning to freeze after warm reboots (turns back on for 30 secs or so and then freezes up but is perfectly fine after 12 hr cool down).

I’d be sending just the bare motherboard (CPU, cards, bracket, battery all removed). I’m located in Chadds Ford, PA and happy to ship within the US.

Looking for someone experienced with older PC boards who uses...
