Low ESR capacitors in Linear Power Supply

Hi , I intend to use low ESR capacitors in a classical linear power supply project ( with a large transformer ) , instead of general purpose capacitors , it is advantage?

not much advantage other than general quality.
you may need to add a low value resistor between the rectifier & caps to limit inrush if you use a lot.

what you really want for linear is caps with high ripple

I have a few linear supplies of various sizes with Nichi HE and Panny FM after the rectifier that are several years old, no problems.

I wouldn't worry about inrush protection beyond what the transformer normally needs as long as you pick sane filter cap values.

Filters in Linear supplies don't have to deal with Ripple created by the Switchers in an SMPS but, even still, Low ESR caps will give better filtering than GP caps will.
          .
Cost is probably about the same so use the good stuff.
          .
There is one situation where they would be significantly better than GP.
If you have [or maybe even your neighbor has] a crappy SMPS in use with no input side filter it can be sending noise back into your power lines which will get to the input of your linear supply.
          - Ever see a cheap PC or VCR or similar cause a radio to buzz [static] when they are both on and no where near close to each other? That's what is going on. No input filter in the device's SMPS so switching noise is feeding back into the power lines.
