    Macronix 1.8V serial flash memory

    Hi,

Having an Asus FX505DT with a broken BIOS, I pulled the BIOS chip - a Macronix MX25U12873F - to read what's left in it. I noticed the chip is a 1.8V chip while my RaspberryPi provides 3.3V on GPIO lines.
I also have an USBASP programmer but it supports 5V and 3.3V voltages.

Any idea on how to safely interface the little guy to one of the readers?

    Thanks,

    B

Re: Macronix 1.8V serial flash memory

I bought a Pololu level shifter adapter but each time when I read the chip I get a slightly different content (I'm checking using MD5SUM). After 2-3 read operations flashbios no longer see the chip. After a few minutes I can read it again.

I checked the voltage - 1.85 to 1.9V. Any idea what I am missing?

        Thanks,

        B

you said its broken bios.. just reflash it with a new bios dump.. for the issue about the 1.8v just buy the 1.8v adapter that will not cost you time, effort and problem because it is proven working for a fraction of $.

that 1.8v adapter card will convert your existing 3.3v to 1.8v. that will safely reflash your bios.. i use ezp2010 that has no issue with 1.8v eeprom.. i have never destroy a 1.8v eeprom with this programmer and a little experiment.. i read both the dump with 1.8v adapter attached and without it read and program it , the same dump checked both and verify its identical maybe its how it powers the eeprom.. anyways. thats my opinion..
