First step to do when encountering a dead mobo

    Hello Badcaps members.

I would like to know especially the members out there with massive experience.

What is the very first thing to do or first thing to check if I've encountered a totally black out motherboard? I mean a motherboard without indicator.

With multi meter what is the first thing you always check? Something that is common faulty piece on the motherboard.

    Hi,

    Step1: Take out Battery
Step2: Connect only the Adapter after checking its DC OUTPUT with a multi meter
Step3: On motherboard check for 3.3V & 5V on primary regulator.

First step... look over the board with a magnifying glass, checking everything - look for your clues, water damage, thermal damage, physical damage.

Yeah, that is correct, I agree with BRO (Inflex). Physical inspection can save you lot of efforts.

Of course, when nothing shows up... then you start to wonder if it's going to be a nightmare job

Definitely these days you want the schem and boardview.

            i usually start in

            - charger
            - charging port
            - fuse
            - inductor (for short)

so i took out one of my spare gigabyte ep35-ds3r mobos from storage for use to do some cpu, ram and video card testing of stuff i bought from ebay and got for free from momaka. he bought 50 e8400 cpus for cheap from ebay some years ago and i decided to help him relieve him of some of his supply since he had waaaay too many!! what did we say about hoarding too much stuff and depriving others of them?! *cough* socialism *cough* lol!

i had to blow some dust off the board and heatsinks with the datavac as i didnt clean it up before putting it in storage. after finishing...

Here is a pretty crazy one.

                Step 1.
Laptop was brought to me as dead not working. Removed everything , cleared everything.
                Step 2.

Some liquid damage close to the Type - C connector, and the connector even though it was cleaned wasn't charging the battery . Removed the Type-C port, and replaced it. Now the laptop turns on and charges battery. Shows external screen , not internal.
                Step 3.

Took out the screen and checked it to a secondary Gen 2 i have, screen works like a charm.
                Step 4.

Lets ,dive into the board. I see the edp cable on the...

                Hey Forum,

I have a dead Acer Laptop from a friend. Find out that its a Mobo fault because Screen is working on other mobo and there are 19V on Power Jack that are going over the two Mosfets into the Mobo. So its actually charging too but no matter what i Do the leds wont come on. So i went over to the 5v and 3v Section and there is nothing at both. The 5v Rail is okay so no short but at the 3v Rail theres a short at PJ401 and on both sides from the Coil PL402 but on the capacitors there is no short. So i found a 19V 3.42Amps Charger (it works) plugged it into the Mobo and the Step...

How can I be sure that my EC chip is dead?
                by double_DD
                Hi all,

As the title suggests, how can I be sure that my EC chip is really dead?

I've recently gotten into this hobby of laptop repairs, and have successfully brought back to life a couple with some easy fixes, mostly shorted caps.

Now I'm working on HP Probook 455 G8, that had some "devil" run around on 3V line, burning a bunch of stuff. Luckily I have a dead 455G7 (for spare parts) so I managed to fix it (swapped burned parts) to a point that it will charge (both on barrel jack and usb-c), but it doesn't want to turn on. There is a 3V3 on a keyboard...
