    HP DV6 6080ep - GPU ATI

    Hello!

A friend of mine brought his DV6 with GPU problems.
The laptop has intel integrated graphics and an ATI gpu.

A month ago, he was unable to enable the ATI and could only work with the laptop with the integrated Intel graphics.
He told also that the laptop when turning on, if the fan would start full speed, we would'nt turn on.
To work on it he had allways to force the Intel graphics, most of the times removing the plug to force battery mode.
If the ATI was activated in Windows, the image would come blurry and unreadable.

Well, I removed the BGA and cleaned it. Reballed it and tested it.
When I booted into windows I allways get a BSOD related to atipackage.

Installed a fresh OS, laptop works fine until I try to install the ATI.
Mesured the SMD's on the chip and found 4 of them with 0.6 ohm (see picture).

    Any thoughts?
    BGA is dead?

Should I order a new one?
Another issue is that the BGA has the code unreadable, and so I dont know wich BGA order to replace this one in case of need.

    Waiting for your follow ups!

    Thanks!

The 0.6 ohm in 4 of the small capacitors isn't a sign of bad BGA chip?

Could it be just a software/drivers issue?

Well bought an ATI 216-0752001 new chip.

Gonna wait for him to arrive and put him on the board... and see if the issues are gone!

If you can't install the driver of the old chip after you reflowed or reballed it, you must replace it.

This chipset is known to be faulty.
                Change it to be sure.

                      Hello!

After a big mess with getting the right BGA from the supplier, I got the correct one a few days go.

So I attached him to the board and ... working like a charm!

                      A few pics.

                      Thanks for all the help!

                      Cheers,

LG Gram 15Z980 picked up on Ebay for $200 (was sold as parts because no M2 drive and bios pw locked), but otherwise intact and working.

Threw a 500gb M2 in, and was able to install Windows. On Gram, Win activation is stored in the bios, so Windows was automatically activated. I still kept getting random bsod's. Also bought a pw and unlocked the bios.

Upgraded Windows to 11, still didn't solve the random & frequent bsod's. Cleaned & reseated all cables, RAM, etc... still getting frequent bsod's. Bought & installed a new stick of RAM, still getting frequent...
