powers on then immediately shuts off

I have a laptop that powers on then immediately shuts off. It does this even when benched(board taken out of laptop; no battery connected).

What things should i check first?

sorry but I'm pretty sure it's not overheating. it shuts off approx 1 sec after it turns on. fan is also clean.

Thanks for the response. I'm an open person, i'll take any suggestions anyone throws at me. It helps me learn by trying out different suggestions. I hope to one day give back to this forum also. But i guess i have a long way to go.

        What brand/model is the laptop?

If the cooler doesn't make contact with the CPU, then it will overheat almost instantly
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

sorry for taking so long to reply. how would i trace the short? what exactly do you refer to as a short?

sorry for my lack of knowledge in this area. i do basic pc repairs(swap parts out, which is easy) but i want to take my skill further by actually trying to repair specific components and not just replace them. Fixing this laptop for actual use isn't even important to me. it's mostly for the learning experience. you guys will definitely see me roaming this forum more often from now on.

                Hello LiquidCap,

i think that problem is in power supply to GPU.
As you said, laptop turns off after cca. 1s.
Power supply need approx. 1s to start all voltages and to do all necessary checks on motherboard.

look for 5v, 3v or Vcc on GPU for short to GND.

It just might be the GPU. Before the problem of instantly shutting off, the laptop had a problem where it would not output any video(LCD nor external vga) sometimes when it boots.

Anyways, realizing my lack of knowledge in electronics I've decided to learn some basic electronics before going any further. I'll find some free resources on the internet about electronics and read up on them. Thanks to all of you for your help.

how about a list of those resources, or better yet how about a zipped archive of pdf printouts of said resources?

check all big coils for resistance to ground. find something lower than 5ohm

Help with Dell Latitude E5470 that shuts down when moved at all. Powers up, but no charge, power jack has brown burn marks
                          by lowpost99@gmail.com
I have a Dell E5470 that powers up and boots windows no problem. Using a non-standard universal type charger, it shuts down immediately if moved, (power short in that charger or AC power jack) because the battery has no charge and isn't charging orange/white lights blinking on the front. When first powered up, BIOS power alarm stated that it could not detect the voltage setting and I had to dis-able the message to get past this. It got into Windows fine, as long as not moved, so I dis-assembled it looking for a cold solder joint on the power jack that I thought might be lifting off the MB, but...

Hi guys have an issue with a friends labtop that has no signs of liquid damage. They said it just stopped turning on.When i press the power button it turns on normally like 35-500millamp draw and it posts and i have picture. But like after 4 seconds after it posts an image it shuts off completely. If i press power button again same thing happens. Did all basic troubleshooting with the motherboard like fresh thermal paste with it completely out the chasis with battery disconnected. Thermal camera shows these two mosfets heating up more than anything else when i press the power button.I have provided...

Dell laptop powers up with kb backlight about 10 seconds, then shuts off
                          by survivalbloke
I've got a Dell Latitude 5580 which came in for no power. It's not exactly a no power issue though. The battery was puffy so I replaced that, but the symptom is that when the power button is depressed, the keyboard backlights will come on for about 10 seconds then go back off. Before depressing power button, I am drawing 112ma and oddly, there is no change in current draw once the button is pressed and the keyboard backlights illuminate.

                          Any ideas?

Dell Latitude 3510 (Intel Core i7-10510U) CPU Overheating

                          Issue Description:
                          1. CPU Overheating to 100°C
                            • When I start the laptop from a cold state, it takes about a minute to reach temps around 80-90-100°C, and CPU thermal throttling triggers.
                            • When the CPU fan is running at full speed (by disconnecting PWM and TACH cables), CPU temperature stays around 50-60°C.
                            • However, when the fan is connected normally to the motherboard, it does not kick in at high temperatures.
                            • I also noticed a few times that the fan kicked in for a very short time, but it does not stay on consistently.

                          Hello all,

I'm stumped on this guy, so wanted to see if anyone has any further ideas:

                          Intro:

This is an Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55-55M1 with unknown prior history (bought "as-is" on eBay). It charges the battery and powers on from both AC adapter and battery, so I think this rules out main power issues.

Upon attempt to boot, it will "reboot" (meaning powers down and then powers on again) only once, and then stays stuck in a status of lights on / no post / no monitor. Powering on with fn+esc maxes out the fans on first boot attempt,...
