Gateway MA2A power on issue pics included

My son got it off craigslist and has worked fine for a few months, then all the sudden it just shut off. I have 19v on the pos center pin on back of the dc jack, checked continuity on grd points and pos to pos of the jack while wiggling it and all says good there. It was running for a while on just the ac adapter and battery or HDD but quit again. With some finessing I can get it to power on again, but I don't know where to test from here.

It kind of looks like the pos pin has been reflowed, but not the other pins. Considering I found a small screw had magnetized itself to the HDD, and they did not put the HS backing plate on the otherside of the MB when they re-assembled it, I'm not sure if it is a heat issue or power issue. I'm trying to find one of those triangular things on ebay. This is my first attempt at a laptop MB, but have repaired many lcd and desk top boards.

But until then could someone mark up the photos of what needs to be tested?

I have attached these pics as they look different than the ones posted in the MA7 thread. https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8305 If you need other(better) pics let me know.

The number on the board says DAMA2AMB8C3 REV:C

Not sure if that is suppose to be touching each other?

    TIA
    Angel

That is solder bridge, looks like someone trying to re-solder the center pin and bridge over to the pad next to it.
By the way, what do you use to add text to the pictures, nice pictures taking too.

It may have the same issue that the ma3 and ma7 boards do. On the top side make sure that the center pin is making contact with the track and the components. The picture of the bottom of the board looks good, but the top looks like the track is eaten away around the center pin. You may have to run wires between the center pin and the components on the top side.

That was my first thought also, but after getting some better closeups it is not burnt or bridged. They must have spilt pop on it.

This is what it looks like now

I used Fastones draw board feature http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

You can see if a schematic can help with your troubleshooting.

Boy b700029, where did you find all these service manuals for laptops? May be you should upload them to Tom's website.

I would still recommend adding the jumpers even if it looks okay. Have you checked with a meter for voltage on the components and not just the center pin?

SheDevil, this PL5 component should be coil and soldered in this way its your ground. Its definitely shouldnt touch positive/center pin of the power connector.

You should separate them with soldering iron or (if you dont have) you can use sharp tool to cut and remove exceed solder between central point and pl5 coil.

Sometimes solder gets expanded by itself caused by quick temperature changes. Thats why it makes contact with Ground and doesn't alows notebook to power on, making short to the power supply.

                    Just these points so far.

On the last 2 battery pins I get .7v, on the 3rd from the bottom I get 3.4v.

I'm just not sure what to test next. Don't want to make it worse.

Off to manage my friends kids new school NB, wifi not on the approved list.
Now that the whoopla of first day of school is over I can look at that PDF and see how greek to me it will be.

                    thanks for finding it.

And attempt to solder top to bottom a piece of wire and see what I get.

                    TIA
