Philips Freevents puked on, not charging

    Hi everyone,

New member with a problematic laptop

History is the laptop was puked on by our baby daughter. It was immediately turned off, battery removed and placed upside down to get the boke out.

I then pulled the laptop to bits (had done this a few times already) and any surplus boke removed. None seemed to be on the mobo or other electronics. Keyboard took the brunt of it.

Anyhoo, once dried all was reassembled, connected to power and booted successfully.

    I then put it away

Now, a few weeks later I booted it and noted that the battery was showing "plugged in, not charging". Not sure if this was shown when reassembled initially. I have double and triple checked the assembly and I believe it's fine. It's been like this for a year now but I'd like it sorted if possible.

Can anyone advise how I test the health if the battery? I can buy a new one but don't want to commit 80 quid till I am more sure it fixes this issue, seems like a big coincidence the battery dies after being boked on, no?

The power supply is fine, internal cabling from this to the mobo seems fine, battery pins look fine and corrosion free, no visible damage (liquid or other) to the mobo either. Fresh install of windows didn't help.

I just run it on mains now but leave the battery in, makes no difference if it's in or out obviously

As soon as the power is pulled the laptop dies

The battery capacity always stays at 0%.....never charges

It was never awesome, maybe used to get 2 hours but after the boke/unused period, it just died......that made me think more that damage was done but I can't be sure.

Id love to know how to check for sure if it was the laptop or battery but we all no its not a simple 2 pin setup like a regular battery

I did some basic tests as below (see pic attached):

    Ok.

All measurements taken assuming that pin 1 is negative (black on my multimeter)

Battery out / Power connected / Computer off
    1 to:
    2 - 4.55v
    3 - 0v
    4 - 0v
    5 - 2.65v
    6 - 2.65v
    7 - 0v

Battery in / Power connected / Computer off
    1 to:
    2 - 2.0v
    3 - 0v
    4 - 0v
    5 - 12.65v
    6 - 12.65v
    7 - 0v

Battery in / Power connected / Computer on
    1 to:
    2 - 2.0v
    3 - 3.3v
    4 - 3.3v
    5 - 12.65v
    6 - 12.65v
    7 - 0v

Not sure if that helps but the mobo obviously changes the voltages to pins 5 and 6 once the battery is connected.

Also, once booted, pins 3 and 4 come to life

    Pin 7 does nothing though.

And obviously, i know nothing about electronics but I am not afraid to have a go. Just ask the gearbox in my old car

Any and all advice appreciated guys.

Oh, and i only broke the wee partiton between pins 2 and 3 on the battery today being clumsy. Problem was present before that.

    Thanks
    Andy

I spy a fuse (F3) below the connector. Checked that (or others in that area) yet?

      Hi buddy,

      No, I havent checked anything.

As i say, I am an electronics......well, nothing.....lol......i didnt even know that was a fuse....but i am game for a try.

All i have at my disposal is a cheap multimeter, its done me so far.

Can you offer some guidance as to how and what to check?

The ohms settings on my meter only cover 2000k, 200k, 20k, 2000 and 200.

      Am i talking utter gibberish?

      lol

      Regards
      Andy

I did a continuity test between pin 1 and 7 and it beeped so i think they are one in the same.

£80 for a battery!? A new battery should be <= £20 on ebay!

Personally I've never had a problem.. Can't speak for everyone, though. All the £20 batterys I buy come with three years warranty.
