Hi all,
Been a while since I've looked at a broken laptop.
Got a HP 15-g092SA (LA-A996P mobo with AMD A8 CPU) here for a family friend, no signs of life / no power.
No short across the DC jack, but only reading ~~0.7v plugged in so something is shorted.
Can't find a schematic or obvious reference points on the board. Any experience with these? Surface mount CPU, might hit it with some heat and see if reflowing makes a difference.

Digitrex CTF4071 - lights turn off
Hi all,
Just getting a few thoughts down for now.
Have a Digitrex CTF4071 here, used to be my main TV. Occasionally the screen would go black when you turn it on, but it would fix itself turning on/off again. It's been sat doing nothing for ~6 months.
Just pulled it out to take a look at it and the screen comes on then turns off after 5-30 seconds.
I haven't plugged in an input to see if the sound stays on yet. I need to do some more digging.
Initial thoughts are potentially bad PSU or bad inverter. I have no doubt that...

Re: iPad mini 2 LCD replacement - have I done wrong?
Hi all,
I posted this to two other iPad repair forums and not a single reply. Can always rely on Badcaps.
Anyway, I had 10 minutes spare so I took a look at this.
Complete digitizer:

iPad mini 2 LCD replacement - have I done wrong?
My 15 month old niece broke my sister's iPad mini 2 LCD. Typical. The digitizer was completely intact with just the LCD being broken, so I set to taking it apart. First time trying to repair an Apple product.
The digitizer came off with the usual battle of glue and stickyness, but this also fell off with it. There is a magnet, and something else (no idea what to even call it) - I'm concerned this may be part of the outer flex for the digitizer.
Any advice before I order parts?

Re: Data Recovery
DMDE did a good enough job; the 'free' limitation of 4k files just means that you have to select all, recover 4k, it will automatically deselect those 4k files so you can continue recovering them 4k at a time.
That combined with EaseUS Data Wizard did fairly well. I ended up just giving the user an external harddrive with every image file I could find, 70% of it being corrupted, rubbish data. Lots of good stuff in there though.
Told the user they had to painstakingly go through every folder and the 100's of thousands...

Re: Data Recovery
What? Are you trying to say you can't reinstall the OS on an Android or iOS device?
This issue is still perfectly relevant in mobile devices. Sorry; not sure I follow what you are suggesting.

Re: Data Recovery
Excellent reply; thank you.
The harddrive is fine, smart data is all OK. My guess is that Windows got corrupted, and rather than talk to me, they went ahead and used the built in recovery partition.
EaseUS data recovery is returning just RAW files, 90% of which is corrupt.
R-studio looks powerful, however runs as a live system only. I have the harddrive connected to a machine via usb.
Running a scan with DMDE now. Will report back. It's looking a lot like the custom recovery did a once...

Re: Data Recovery
Recuva failed miserably. EaseUS Data Recovery pro has also failed. It's quoted to have found 2.72TB of data but nothing really there whatsoever.
I'm starting to wonder if the Vaio recovery program did a 'full' backup/overwrite rather than a quick format.

Data Recovery
Lots of free tools floating around on the net, but no reputable IT forums actually discuss this at any length.
What's everyone's experience with data recovery?
Neighbour reinstalled windows, formatted, questions where all the 7 years worth of family photos and business files went. Ask me for help before, not after!

Re: Restarts on shutdown
Definitely.
Fortunately, the liquid damage was local to just the PCMCIA board, which is a separate daughterboard on the dell 1545. Removed it entirely. Didn't need a replacement.
The keyboard was purely just the keyboard - small snag in the ribbon. The two other keyboards that had similar symptoms were also damaged!...

Re: Restarts on shutdown
Love it. This laptop had been to a proper "repair shop" who replaced the hard drive.
With a faulty hard drive.
They didn't spot the clear liquid damage on the PCMCIA board causing a power loop.
They told the guy they had "forgot" to replace the keyboard when requested, however the keyboard is clearly marked on the back "Dell 1545 TESTED OK", so it's had a second hand keyboard. They replaced it with a faulty keyboard. Awesome.
They also forgot to put the screws in to hold the...

Re: Restarts on shutdown
Gave in and stripped it down - Liquid damage. Typical! That's the power issue sorted, if only I could suss out the damn keyboard.

Restarts on shutdown
Quick help needed.
Anyone experienced this before? Tell the laptop to shutdown or sleep or hibernate, and it will go through the motion, then turn back on instantly as if the power button is pressed.
Tried it without the power switch connected and without a keyboard.
Hopefully unrelated but some of the keys don't work - tried a few other keyboards and still the same. Last night it started working out of nowhere, then stopped again.
Customer is insisting it wasn't like this when it came to me. I know that to be rubbish but what can you...

Re: Minimum ram amount
My apologies, this is a hp G1 not G6.
The 4gb module in there is 12800 and all the ram I have is 10600, so that could be it.

Any ideas why it requires a 4gb module then? 2 x 2gb won't make it boot....

Re: Minimum ram amount
I've been out of this game for ages now and haven't worked on a laptop since DDR2 was mainstream, are DDR3L machines backwards compatible with DDR3 modules?

Minimum ram amount
Weird one here, got in a HP G6 350 i5 for repair as it would turn on and cut off after 5 seconds.
Turns out the 4GB ddr3 module had shorted.
Interestingly, this i5 machine won't recognise any DDR3 under 4GB. I have loads of 2GB modules but no 4's kicking about.
Anyone encountered this?
