MSI 694D Pro2 - Does Not POST After Recap

I just recapped my board with Rubycon MCZs - when I flick the power switch, the 4 LED lights in the bracket at the back go RED (Manual says CPU problem - but the CPUs worked beforehand). Fans on CPU spin for a second then spen down. I've tried using just one CPU. Any clues? Thanks

Probably bad VRMs... try a cmos clear anyway before giving up.

Measure the voltage on the capacitors near the CPU; also check for accidental bridging somewhere or other soldering problems.

Thanks for the advice, Randy... What are VRMs?

i've never used a multimeter on computers before - only in Physics labs. Do I just power on my machine and bridge the voltmeter across two nodes so they are in series? What should the voltages read?

Thanks for your replies. Do these VRMs just break by themselves? I've taken great care in removing and replacing components to not knock other parts of the board.

Is there anything I can test without buying a multimeter? I'm a newbie when it comes to electronics. And with the 20 or so pins the VRM has, which two do I put a voltmeter in parallel to?

Edit: I just thought what I did different. I tried out my new Coldheat soldering iron (I knew it wasnt a good idea ) - would the sparks be what caused the VRM to fry?

Urmm? Applying high voltage discharges to motherboards = BAD idea. IMHO.

that coldheat crap thing can apply 6v across the tip.i can see it sending that 6v into an ic if you touch it just right.
                      not good.

                        > did the board work before the recap?

                        Yep

                        > coldheat iron=crap. the money youi wasted on it would buy you a dmm. return it if you can.

Doubt I could; Hong Kong works differently than North America - the shop comes before the customer =\ So even though I pay much less for Rubycon capacitors (see other thread) I suffer crap customer service and no aftersales service. I should've just waited till I flew back to Canada before buying the cold heat.

                        > where did the sparks come from?

according to the cold heat site, "It's normal for it to spark"

So what could have failed? Would it be the VRM?

(P.S. I am away on Holiday for the next 9 days so apologies if I don't reply before then)

it sparks cos it isnt grounded.

did you buy the MCZ from pcbulb/waifong?

Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

                              CPU VRM area up close…...

I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

                              Hi all

Hope this is in the correct place.

I'm planning on recapping both motherboards. I actually already ordered recplament caps for them, where I will be changing out most for poly's.
Could use some double checking to see if I'm not doing something stupid .

Pictures of the boards are attached.
What I will be replacing with what : (planned)

Got 4 CCFL 16/10 monitors for free.

The resolution is almost Full HD (1680x1050)

VGA Input only is a bummer though.

Uses cheap TN panel with terrible viewing angles.

Even though this is not 17" 5:4 screen, still has very low resell value here. Can be found for 15-20 euros.

All the 4 monitors were not working and needed psu recap. Used mix of mediocre / junk caps to recap them, then donated 3 of them to friends/relatives and kept 1 for myself. Also like to install extra caps on empty spaces to help them last longer.

The more time passes, the more nostalgic I get with old hardware. Video cards and motherboards tend to be my weak spot. As such, I often scavenge eBay for old PC hardware, especially anything with bad caps or in need of similar minor repair.

For today's consideration, I have a popular low-end card from back in the early 2000's: an nVidia GeForce FX5200. This one is the BFG Tech. Asylum take on the card, with 256 MB of DDR RAM running at 400 MHz and 128-bit bus (vs. 64-128 MB and 64-bit bus on many of the cheaper versions.)

                              I think it's easy...
