    Abit KT7 Raid

    i been reading your fourm..
the stickys..this and that in them..pretty cool fourm ya all got here..

just kinda wanting to make sure on a few things...

i know for sure my Abit Kt7 raid board needs to be re-caped..
i wanted to know if using the HZ series Nichicons
were ok to use for my Kt7-raid..
as long as i use the same microfarad and Volt ratings for each replaced capacitor being replaced...

even if the physical size on a few of them is different from the orginals..
    like..
not wanting to use the 8x20's due to height restrictions by the AGP slot
    and the PCI slots...
using the 10x16's instead..(same microfarad and Volts as orginals)

PLUS if its ok to use use 2 sets of the HN series as i couldnet obtain the HZ series for those rated capacitors..
like have HZ's and HN's together on the same board..

    Re: Abit KT7 Raid

If you use 10x16's in an 8mm position, just keep in mind that the lead spacing won't match the pads. The cap will need some extra clearance above the board where the leads are bent inward, so it will end up taking more than 16mm's of height. You might end up at 17-18mm.
16mm negligibly exceeds the height of an AGP/PCI slot, but not enough to cause any interference. It's actually a convenient height for making installation easier. Going any taller you could theoretically have interference, but you're not going to go over by very much.

Mixing different series certainly isn't a problem if they're on different circuits. If they're on the same circuit, I don't know if that's technically a concern but personally I wouldn't worry about it. Somebody else probably knows more about this.

HZ series are extremely low ESR, among the lowest of any conventional electrolytics. HN is one notch down but still very high end.
The original caps on a KT7 probably aren't as low ESR as what you're installing, so if anything your parts are overkill. They should certainly work fine.

      thanks for the reply G

yeah i just read everywhere in the forums lower is better..
and those were the lowest/highest i could find..
i didnt know what the orginal ESR values were on my KT's old caps...
i guess numbers that low/high are only for the new dual-core Dogs
      its Ok
a little over kill is only fitting..
and a good way to send off the OLD TOP DOG KT7...
yeah its funny when i bought My Kt she was the top dog..
ha ha its funny how one day a lil KT-raider and a AMD 1.4er 100Mz
set ya back a lil over 400 bucks
      now its worth like 20..
a lil over kill is ok and a fitting way to send off a old legend..

      thanks for the reply G..
well im off to put a heart trans plant in my old faithful
give her her last lap around the track..
i think when she dies again..
i'll bury her next to my old hound dog
and let her rest in peace
      thanks for the reply G

those boards are nothing to laugh at.
i just recapped a kt7a-raid.stuck an athlon 2600+ on it.
it sees it as unknown cpu at 2000mhz
runs cool and stable.its going in a box that among other things runs my device programmer.it needs the isa slot.

your saying i can put a newer type processor in my KT7
          do the 2600+'s have a 100mhz bus?
yeah i thought 1400 athlons were it for the KT7-raid..
due to the 100mhz bus limit..
          ..
dude i dont wana fry nothing here on my board..
          i was SWEATING!!!..for like 10 hours..
re-capping My lil old dog KT..

Glad your so pleased. That board should last a good long while now for you. You would be amazed what huge effect recapping a motherboard can have. As you said, most of the time its faster than brand new.

if that makes a difference in shoehorning/sledgehammering in a faster than officialy supported cpu.

where they over clocked it to i think 1200..
                  and was stable as hell...
where they were talking about how good the Old dog KT7 really was..
i wish i had the link to show you...
now i want to find that article for ya..

now im thinking the A's have 133 busses?...
                  am i right?..
                  anyone...im thinking they do..90% sure
                  the Kt7-raid....no "A"...
                  100 Busses..
                  mines 100 mhz...mines no A.. ..

i wonder how many KT7's are still alive in the world!!..
i wonder how many are collecting dust because they died from bad caps..
and all they would need is a RE-CAP operation..

                    Re: Abit KT7 Raid

That's right. The KT7 has a KT133 chipset, which runs at 100fsb (despite the misleading name). That chipset doesn't overclock much so you can't get 133mhz out of it.
KT7A has the KT133A chipset, which supports 133fsb.

Both of those exist in RAID and non-RAID versions.

                    There's also a KT7E. Shockingly, it has a KT133E - which I don't know much about but I think it's officially 100fsb, but newer.

                      Re: Abit KT7 Raid

I have a few of these, all out to pasture now. Nice board, recapping does help. I learned to hate all things VIA over the years, but these boards still run well.

The problem I have is.. "why". Unless you have a need like KC8 (isa slot), the amount of effort (read: $$) seems a waste when you can buy 3.2 P4 Cedar Mill processors for under $50, and boards to match.

                          Re: Abit KT7 Raid

While at the local computer store, I found a KT7A with raid sitting on a pile of mobos ready for recycle. He let me have it and a nvidia TNT agp for $7. Probably too much for a dead board, but video card alone was worth the money.

Got it home, and dead as a door nail. No bulging caps. Put my blue esr meter on all the caps ... and turned up NOTHING! I figured I had met my match. Swapped out cpu with a good one, and still nothing. Even the fan wouldn't spin. Put in a POST tester - in a pci slot. Still nothing. I figured maybe it had a confrontation with a Bestec psu and came out second best! I was ready to throw in the towel and toss it.

Decided to try one last thing. Found a guy on ebay who does bios reflash for five. Sent him the chip, and a week later here it came back. Put that bios chip back in and now it POSTs. Added a 6 gig hard drive and a old CDROM to test with, loaded the latest Ubuntu, and it works fine.

Now I'm wondering ..............how many caps should I replace if it isn't giving any problems now? To be such an old board, it sure does run nice. To be sure, it IS worth the $7 I paid for the mobo and video card! I just wonder what happened to that bios chip that it needed reflash.

Depends on what you're going to use it for. If it's just something to play around with, you can probably leave it as is. Otherwise if it's something serious where you need good reliability, then recap it.

Awesome! Sounds like a sweet deal for ~$12. If you have good ventilation on those Teapos, they might even last for quite a while.
What processor are you running on it right now?

Just a 900 Mhz cpu right now. I think it will go a lot faster, and I might find a faster processor further down the road. For now I am pleased that it works at all - quite a challenge to get it running again. When I think about the TRS-80 I had years ago, this is a very impressive machine! I know there are faster and better machines, but hard to beat the price.

I wasn't sure what the max speed was for the AGP slot, so for testing I put an old Voodoo 3 pci card in it. A few years back, everyone was talking about the Voodoo 3.

Had a 512 Mb PC133 memory stick in my stash. Put it in and works fine.

Yeah, I was going to say, the video card didn't look like a nVidia TNT (now that I look at the picture again, you have a PCI card in there). The Voo Doo 3 is very nice, though, because it support wrapper/3DFX and older games look much better.
