    ViewSonic VX2235wm LCD Monitor

Well, you won't believe it, but just 2 months after my HP L1906 LCD got caps replaced, my ViewSonic VX2235wm just instantly went very dim. Fresh from the HP repair, I decided to disassemble the ViewSonic, and guess what I found? You got it, bulging CapXcon's. Thankfully, there are only 9 caps on the power board, and of those only 7 were CapXcon. I will replace all but the monster 480uF. It appears OK as do the TAICON's. Will post pics when I get my parts from Digikey and do repair.

    MAN I love this site!

If it can be assembled, it can be disassembled.

fyi, viewsonic is rebranded chinese crap.

capxon is probably te most common lcd offender. never good.

lucky you power supplies (internal and brick kind as well as embedded) are incredibly easy to solder. be sure to make the joints extra well so they dont go cold.

Oh, and one more problem I saw was that when you switch the monitor to digital, you get static lines across the screen. Analog worked fine. I bought this monitor for really cheap off Craigslist, so I could live with it.

OK, got my parts in from Digikey. Fast processing and shipping, as usual. Here are the board pics. Notice the black CapXcons are bulging. There were two that were in really bad shape with the bottoms literally coming out of the canister.

Woohoo! Repair went great ... took all of 1 hour (see pic). Monitor is working great now. Nice bright picture, and running in digital mode without any static lines. Hard to believe you don't see these capacitor problems on one of those CNBC or CNN specials. I wonder how much unnecessary landfill space has been taken up with electronics that only had bad caps. Amazing huh?

I have the very same monitor, but the monitor won't startup at all no power light or any backlight. I opened up the monitor but could not find any obvious bulging capacitors. There is a squealing noise from the inverter board, seems to me like some kind of oscillation happening in the power supply. Will some shorted caps of high ESR ones cause these problems ?

              Hello Sasmit
Not the best of places to have posted on a problem Monitor
Best place was Troubleshooting Computer Displays, where more Members that can help will see it (maybe a helpful Moderator may move it for you)
In the mean time have you checked your fuse in wall plug?
Have you checked AC input fuse?
Post pictures of both sides of your P/Supply, this will help
Are you on a 120v or 240v AC power supply?
Can you check DC voltage across the big 400v filter cap?

I agree with Bobdee on posting under troubleshooting area. However, I will say that not all bad caps have obvious bulges or leaks. There may be a slight bulge that some people may not even notice. However, every failing device I've recapped DID have some obviously bulging caps. Good luck.

                  Hey Birdyman,

I picked up the same monitor the other day that would power on but had no backlight.
Took it home and popped the back off to find a load of dead Capxons like you.

I've replaced them and it seems to work fine, picture is not as bright as I would have hoped for though. Do you reckon replacing your Taicons made a difference, I've left mine in.

Well, I ESR tested my Taicon's today (with my new toy), they claim to be OK.

That hole is for a Kensington lock (anti-theft). If it's like most monitors, there are a series of clips around the perimeter that you'll need to undo (use a credit card, putty knife or even a guitar pick so you don't damage the plastics). Also, carefully look under labels or inside deep holes for screws.

For help on replacement caps, once you are able to identify the caps that are currently there, post a list of what you have (uF value, voltage, make/series, diameter, height) and someone can assist. Typically people recommend Panasonic FC/FM series from Digikey if you are in the United States.

have this exact monitor, worked great for a few years. untill i moved to my new apartment, it had some powerup issues. to where i had to turn it on and off sevral times to get it to work right. otherwise it would just show the "powerd on" status on the LED

yet the screen is dark. i put a bright light on it i can see that it is indeed on. but no backlight. so i figured this was the issue. maybe?

i took the thing apart. pain in the but...

and got the power-supply and noticed. the caps look ok. but a few ICs on the XNEON end are toasty and brown. right before the HV transformers think these may be a bridge rectifier. they read P605 BZ6N2X google dosn't even know what they are?

                          anybody know?
