    Hitachi CM803u

    Hi All,

I recently inspected a ladies computer and noticed some bad caps.. Recapped the motherboard successfully (it wasn't completely dead just bulging caps) .. Posts and works fine at the moment.. A week ago is when I inspected.. Recapped last night.. Within the week her big Hitachi monitor died out.. I diddn't smell anything at first but when I was working on her computer and set it back down beside her monitor I can definately smell burnt chip or something..

I opened up the Hitachi but can't see where the burnt chip is etc.. The monitor does power cycle and LED does stay green.. I'm not to sure where to go from here.. I don't really have the tools to diagnose much other than visually..

Anybody have any experience with these and what board I should be looking at.. Every chip I can see so far looks ok.. There is definitely a burnt smell..

I have the Hitachi service guide but its like chinese to me.. I don't really understand it.. Even following the troubleshooting diagram.. Any ideas?

If the lady doesn't want the monitor back ill keep it around and maybe try and break it down and provide further information..

    Thanks

Pictures of both sides of boards are going to be needed
    sounds like inverter problem
shine a bright torch (flat to screen)when monitor is connected to comp that is up and running, preferably in darkened room (with monitor turned on) to see if you can see faint image of your desktop, this will eliminate mainboard if you see image, this will save time for you and help those who will assist you, there dont seem to be any info on this monitor in forum so pics are a must

This is a CRT based monitor.

For a number of reasons, both health and personal, I will no longer be active on this board. Any PMs asking for assistance will be ignored.

CRT monitor indeed.. Should I still try and see faint image or is that for LCD only etc?

Identical (or nearly) chassis as mine, here: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6733

That unit is well armored , as you will see when you get the back cover off. TAKE PICTURES! as you go into it so you know how it all goes back together and where the connectors go.

The back is a full circuit board in itself and is plugged into the mainboard on the bottom via several edge connectors. The trick here is to keep it together enough so you can get to test it, while apart enough to get to items you need to test.

Provide yourself a LARGE work area that you can work around, as you don't want to have to move this 40 pound monster.

An isolation transformer is a MUST to work on this set as the whole left side (from back) of the bottom board is mains live. The 2 large caps on lower board (near left and center) need to be discharged with a 10k resistor. They will hold a substantial charge for days. Of course, getting the bottom shield off is a treat in itself. I warned you.

Once you get it partially disassembled, look for an obvious burnt component(s) that you smelled.

Be cautious of not damaging or crushing any components near the front edge on the lower board. The clearance is tight and the components are small and fragile there and very little "wiggle room" is afforded you due to cabling and connectors.

Report back with some pics or findings.

These were VERY expensive monitors in their day. Mine was over $1,200.

Wow.. Im suprised to see that price.. Thanks for the info toasty.. I haven't really dissembled it much.. Just side panels and roof and took a look at the back.. I can't see the board closest to the back which I think is a big microprocessor (between the back pane and metal backing very small space to try and look).... Everything looks fine.. Powers on clicks and here the degauss like sound.. but no video or picture whatsoever.. Probably just going to reassemble and see what the owner wants to do etc..

Look for what burned. That's the clue to the failure.

What is it about old CRT's taking a shit WHILE WE'RE THERE on service calls?

Last month I setting up a wireless repeater for a client, and while I'm configuring it on her old Gateway desktop... the monitor starts making snapping sounds, the picture goes crazy, and the stench of burnt starts wafting out of the monitor. While I was using it. I ended up loaning her a pretty nice Philips I had laying around while she looked for an LCD.

It was an 8 year old LG-manufactured monitor with a Gateway badge on it. Had a damn nice picture too before it went.

An exactly same kind of monitor blew in front of me yesterday while I was adding two wireless clients on an office (not a service call, just a favor to a friend). He laughs at me because every time I step into his office, some old equipment of him just give up the ghost ..... I just lent him a 19" LCD that I just recently repaired, just as I lent him a wireless router, his dot matrix printer, his fax and some USB memory sticks. Now that I think of it, half of his office is mine, so maybe I'll end up being a firms associate.

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

                            Good evening, gentlemen.

I have a problem with my monitor. It turns off after a few seconds or flickers. Shining a flashlight on the screen doesn't show any image, so I guess it's not the "2 seconds to dark" I read in the forum.

To turn it back on, I have to press the power button twice. Then after a few seconds it turns off again or flickers. See video.

Looking through my repair pictures and notes, it's been a long time since I posted anything in the LCD monitors section. So here goes that.

I'm dedicating this thread to one of the very first LCD monitors I repaired (if not the first one), which was more than 10 years ago now. The monitor is a Wise Wing, model F199. It's a 19” CFL-backlit LCD. I got it for free off of Craigslist in 2009 from a guy, who said he bought it for cheap from Wallmart and the monitor worked only for a little less than 2 years before quitting.

When I saw the Craigslist post, I wasn't...
