Emachines E19T5W bad caps

Power board is a Mirage Electronics PI-190DTLB.

Was told it would power and just flash on and off. In actuality monitor appears to power up but only display bright bands of colour. Upon opening the control board looks OK but there are 7 obviously bad Xunda caps. Some browning on the PCB near the step-up transformers too.

Does anyone know if this board was made in any revision without Xunda caps? It's such an old monitor it's not really worth the time/money/effort of recapping the board, and even if it were I only have a 12W soldering iron to work with.

Okay so I just pulled the Xunda caps clean out with my bare hands, without any damage left to the PCB pads (these solder joints are pretty terrible). The PCB holes are clear for new caps.

How difficult would it be to just fit and solder new caps with a 12W iron? Could I get away with it without flux? The joints look small enough to be doable.

12W no flux you will be lucky to melt non leaded solder. I guess try one and see how it goes. Pre heat the board with a hair dryer might help.
Was it connected to a pc when it had the colour bands, if not, that could have been what it does as self test prior to attaching a vga cable.

I suppose - I'd rather just avoid flux if possible. Hate the fumes from that stuff.

Nah, this was a very definite monitor failure - I used to own this monitor myself. There were (seemingly of random-width) purple-brownish bands all over the monitor. The PSU caps were in pretty bad state so it could just be that, but I'm sort of worried the control board has bitten the dust too.

Someone here had a similar problem and had to recap both the control board and PSU. It would cost the best part of £13 to do that over here. Tempted to just scrap the LCD as it's old and probably barely worth that much anyway.

It's worth it, IMO, if you have a use for the monitor or can give it to someone who can use it. Good quality caps will get you more years of useful lifetime than you care for.
If not, then probably better to pass it down on Freecycle.

In the end I gutted it for the LCD and skip'd the rest of it. Just isn't worth the time and cost when I can get a known reliable monitor brand for not much more than that cost.
