    Dell 2405FWP; bad Cap and bad resister?

    Hi,

    I have a Dell 2405FWP I bought with me when I moved from USA to France. It is dual voltage, and it worked for a while, but now it wont power on.

    I have very (very) little electronics experience, but I would like to learn more, and hopefully experience the satisfaction of fixing more things instead of just junking them and buying more stuff.

    So... I watched this video to learn how to take the back off (it was a bit counter-intuitive; you take the front bezel off to access the back). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXAQxwCTuuI

    Looking around, I saw 2 parts that look bad to me;
    --- a Elite 129uF 450V Capacitor
    --- a R?70 resistor (? character is hard to read; may be a 6) (red, red, silver, gold)

    Here is a picture of the 2 parts I think are bad;

    And here is where they are on the board;

    Can I please get someone more knowledgeable than me to (visually) verify if both these parts are bad? (let me know if you need more/better photos).

    If they are bad, could I please get some help determining exactly what I need to buy, and where? (it will need to be a website as I live in France).

    Thanks for your help,
    Bruce.

    Please can you remove the pictures and repost them using Manage Attachments
    which is found under go advanced which is below quick reply.

    The two items you mention are faulty - the main cap - looks like 120uf 450v
    and the resistor has a hole in it - i will check out the value from the colours
    EDIT
    Red Red Silver Gold is 0.22 ohms - you will need to physically measure the resistor to know the wattage

    Other items may also be blown eg the transistor near the resistor and whatever is on the heatsink connected to the resistor

    Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair

      That is PFC Voltage booster section, the MOSFET on the hest sink next to the burnt out resistor, more likely to be shorted out and more likely to take out the PFC Controller which is the surface mounted.

        Thanks for the replies,

        -- how do I edit the original message; so that I can remove the images and re-post them as attachments (as requested)?

        -- So, it sounds as if the problem is likely to be bigger than just these 2 components. Is it worth me pursuing? As a raw beginner I don't really want to invest too much time and money into this just to discover that the problem is beyond my ability to diagnose and resolve (PFC Controller sounds like it would be difficult to source (and expensive)).

        Thoughts?

        Thanks,
        Bruce.

          You may have also other sections of the power supply that will need to be checked for shorts or open as well. You may want to find out what the replacement board will be first.

            My monitor suffered what looks like an identical failure as per attached image, an hour or so ago, and this post was one of the first hits.

            Based on these replied I guess I should be looking for a full PSU board replacement rather than just replacing the obviously busted cap and resistor?

                Dell 2209WA - power supply - Fusible Resistor replacement
                by jinu_j
                Hi

                I am trying to repair an ancient Dell 2209WA Monitor which suddenly shut off with a pop sound. On investigation found that one of the fusible resistors had blown. Further investigation identified multiple components as faulty because of which the fusible resistor blew. Please refer the attached circuit diagram showing the components that were found to be damaged.

                1. FR950 - blown fusible resistor - 0.2 Ohm 1W
                2. Q950 - shorted Q950 MOSFET - 650V 10A N Channel Mosfet
                3. R835 - Blown Resistor - 20KOhm SMD resistor
                4. D930 - Shorted Schottkey Diode...

                Dell E6400 PT434 type Battery Charging Stuck at 1%. Battery Pinouts?
                by Bowline
                My question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?

                Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?

                My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
                The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.
                I have tried multiple different Dell power adapters. My Dell...

Resistir is for PHASE_W FAN1_TACH_FB... rpm not given now but as i said therefore the laptop is working again...

                Hello all,

                this is my first post, so if I make mistakes please do not hesitate to point them out, thank you in advance.

                I got a Dell Latitude 5420 (Service Tag: 7RFM6D3, Motherboard: GDF40 LA-491P Rev.: 2.0 (A01)) which does not start and I want to repair it. These are the symptoms:

                If the laptop is only connected to the AC adapter (battery removed):

                When I press the power button, the keyboard backlight and the display backlight are turning on. Caps key light is lightning, but key does not respond to pressing it.

                The power/battery...
