Best sounding bookshelf setup I've heard to date

Here we have a set of Polk Audio LSi 9's, driven by two Adcom GFA-565 monoblocks for the low and, and two Knight monoblock tube amps for the highs. Source is a modded tube output CDP, going through an Adcom pre.

It was admired by all, though some may look like they're falling asleep, they're actually in a trance -

The Adcom amps are truely massive! They showed up in original boxes.

The modded CDP spinning some DSOTM-

This entire tube output stage is custom. The CDP was originally completely digital -

Lets just say this little rig stole the show.

That ain't no bookshelf setup - lol...

Modding the CDP source with a tube line stage is pointless, IMHO. I'll post a schematic later (if I can find it) of an LT1208 high-performance op-amp line stage that is unbeatable for the price.

Tubes should be reserved for the pre-, and nothing else, IMHO. However, to each his own.

Actually, I held a small gathering of Polk Audio fans at my house this weekend. They are all members of the "Club Polk" forums. We had a great time! That wasn't the only system in attendance, but it sure sounded nice!

Well, yes.... Not technically if you watch, but you need to have your ears aligned with the speakers or the soundstage will be off. Having your eyes open is a matter of preference. Most people at this gathering chose to keep their eyes open for fear of being attacked by my stealth kitties.

I'm not sure if all the markings are custom by the company that modded it. Obviously, this was not originally a tube CDP. They yanked the SS output side and dropped in the custom tube board.

                    hmm... looks somewhat similar.
but i doubt they would use a Goldstar CD Player for that *lol*

the one my brother has looks kinda different (no earphone conn., symbols on the play,... keys smaller, etc.)

picture is a Goldstar GCD-636 (?) and the one my brother has is a GCD-616 (couldn't find any pic.. not on ebay, not on google.. damn)

You should change the caps in your LSi9's next.

WHOA! That's MY CD-Player... except mine is a Magnavox and it's only 1X oversampling, I think. I do remember from researching it that there is a small following for my CD-Player, but it's funny to see someone rework it and change all the silk-screening as on the one in the picture. How funny.

                              Awwwww, crud.

And here I thought that my Harmon-Kardon Soundsticks 2 were an ideal bookshelf sound system.

I even have my old iPod plugged into them.

I didn't know that one needed such a large Bookshelf!

Who knew that Thermionic technology would have such staying power?
