M-Audio Xponent DJ console - get new faders for FREE

A neighbor gave me this console to keep in exchange for repairing some stuff for him. He said it works, but the volume fader on the left side is kinda wonky and "needs cleaning, like last time you did it". This console has had work done on it in the past, both by me and someone else. I had taken apart both volume and pitch faders on the left side and cleaned them, for the same issue, and also resoldered the USB connector.

First, I took apart the console to replace the RCA jacks on the "booth" output, as the original ones were missing, instead there were 2 ugly ones hanging from pieces of wire soldered to the inside. I don't know who did that but they've been like that for a long long time. I am actually amazed that ugly job didn't break in 3 years. Good riddance.

Then i tested the master output as that was apparently "not working", and the booth output was used instead. I never bothered to actually test it until now. Turns out there was nothing wrong with it, except for the jacks being a little oxidized and making crackling noises when the cable was moved. A bit of cleaning fixed that.

After i'd fixed the jacks and went to test them, the left fader went REALLY wonky for some reason. At 95% travel it would only go up to 3/4 in the software, then as it hit the end it would jump up suddenly.

I desoldered the fader and took it apart fearing the worst. And indeed, it wasn't dirty. The resistive layer was severely damaged - it measured ~56k instead of 10k! It was too far gone.

However, there was something that became immediately apparent. The faders have only 3 legs, so there's just 1 channel (this is a digital console), but on their back it says 10Kx2... Hmm. Also, it only has one brush inside, but it does have 2 resistive layers. The other layer looked brand new (obviously, since there was nothing to scratch it). I measured and whadd'ya know - bang-on 10k. You thinking what i'm thinking?

I cut the connection to the worn layer and wired the other one up. I then flipped the brush around so it slides on this other layer, put a bit of grease on it, re-assembled the fader and soldered it back into the console. It worked a treat, so i did the other one as well. Now both volume faders work like brand new.

The really good news is that all the faders are built like that - so if one of the other ones fails, i can do the same trick. Looks like i will get a couple more years of use out of this console. Sometimes, economics of scale end up being a good thing.

lol, that's really funny with the dual sliders . Economies of scale can indeed give good outcome sometimes.

I had a somewhat similar experience with a cheap LED strip from eBay. The LED strip was designed to take RGB LED chips. But they also made single-color only LEDs strips as well. So for the while LED strip, they used LEDs that had 3 individual LED dies in each chip. Turns out, only one of the LEDs in each chip was connecte to (+). So when the LEDs started going out or became dim, I simply just put the (+) on the next line of LEDs. Result: like new LED strip again .

Fader replacement on 1980s mixer - help with this schematic
      by Transformer man
Hi - I am looking to replace faders on a mixing desk from the early 1980s. They are tired and worn. I'm new at looking at schematics and would really appreciate your help and expertise on replacements.

The current faders are 88mm long with 60mm fader movement and are 10K B (which I think is a linear fader). They have been swapped out at some point (tell tale signs of additional screw holes a few mms below the top screw hole).

I think the schematic suggests 5K B faders (but as a newbie I'm not sure if I am even looking at the correct part of the schematic!?). I have...

PCB Layer to layer short on a low voltage power plane - how to find it?
      by Prott
      Hello!
Recently I have a problem finding a dead short (as far as my cheap multimeter is concerned) on a multilayered (12 layer) PCB. It is caused due to mechanical stress (warping the board and, I assume, cracking inner layers). Injecting voltage of 0.9 V (operational voltage of that part of the circuit) and drawing 0.5 W doesn't cause any visible hotspot on a thermal camera.

Does anybody have any tips & tricks in order to locate the short more or less precisely? The area has a lot of powerplanes, so it's both blessing and a curse.

Silly idea no. 1: Can I...

      Rotel RA-810 Fader Caps
      by bermo96
      Hi,

I rescued an old Rotel RA-810, after a little cleaning and new thermal grease for the transistor it works like it should.
But unfortunately the fader caps are gone, they are nice aluminum caps, so I want to try to find something similar.

Does anyone know if this amp shared these fader caps with other brands? Or if there is something similar on the internet?

The picture is for the balance cap, the faders have the black line running through the cap.

      Hi,

Here is a dump of all the pdfs and pcbs from XZZ in the drones and game console sections 😜

To open the .pcb files either by fork of OBV (pull request link) or FlexBV

      Enjoy 😁...
