    Re: Onkyo HT-R591 keeps clicking

First I want to properly measure the transformer. I have started removing it, but there are a couple of connectors with wires that are going all over the receiver, so I have to take apart, most of the boards to reach to those connectors.
Did not have enough time to do all of that.
It seems that all the pins/wires are coated and it's very hard to get a good reading. I will remove the transformer tomorrow, clean up a couple of conections and I will measure them and I will let you know.
I have disconnected the transformer from the rest of the receiver, except those ribbon cables that are coming out from underneath the output PCB and it was still clicking.

Using budm's illustration, you can test at the pins. There is no need to remove the transformer.

What kind of resistance should be at the primary?
I have used the transformer's 110V connector and the ohm meter did not show anything(OL), but when I have measured the two pins of the primary, it had the 110V. Doesn't make sense.

A few ohms for the primary winding. Near zero for the thermal fuse if its ok.

No this makes perfect sense V = I * R with very low I and very high R you can have V volts just fine.

So the resistance is so high, that my meter can't measure it?

You will still get 110 at the terminal of the White (neutral) and Yellow wires but the winding will not be getting it if the themal fuse is open. That is why you need to check the thermal fuse and the the resistance of the primary wind at the connection AFTER the thermal fuse.

The shinny wires belong to the fuse. Don't cut any enameled wires, they belong to the primary.
Is the thermal fuse open circuited?

That is how I did it. Only the second had to be broken to be able to remove it. Thank for the good idea.
I may need to brake the third one too, to be able to reinsert it though. I will see.
I have connected temporarily the primary, to see if it would work, and it did.
It seems like there is some kind of short/bad connection somewhere, because the sound comes and goes and when it's there I can't adjust it. If I bend the rear metal cover, the receiver turns off. It's not put together yet, so it may be something with that, I will check it out tomorrow.

When you fit the replacement thermal fuse, be certain that it is insulated the same as the original or you might end up with a live amplifier. Also you need to be careful to not trip it while soldering it.
Most amplifiers malfunction while the back plate is loose because this where the input ground gets referenced to chassis.
I have never found a permanent underlying reason for open circuited thermal fuses in amplifier transformers.

                        Thanks for the tips.
There is a special way of soldering them?
It can be a power surge?

Soldering thermal fuses is difficult. I recommend wire-wrapping it if you can. If you do solder it, check the continuity after soldering to check it's still OK.

Can I see the picture of this part? You can use higher current rating but keep about the same temp rating.

but you will have to wrap the body with KAPTON tape since it does not have the isolated ceramic body.
                                Is this the one?

There is a main fuse, as well, right? Thermal fuse is rarely intended to be a current limiter, that is the job of the mains input fuse.

In which case current rating of the thermal fuse is an "equal to or higher" rating.

Thanks, so a 5A should be fine then.
I'm looking at Digikey and there are to temperatures, one is the Holding Temperature and one Rated Functioning Temperature. Which one should be 145*C? How much can I be out of spec? There are none stocked around 145*C.

                                            Hi all!!

Ok just got a Onkyo SKW-593 sub woofer that has no power person told me that it smoked and that his GF let the volume full when she powered off the amp and when he came to turn it on the sub played but then suddenly smoke was coming out, didn't say from where. So opened it up and saw a resistor made of metal (pic) but can't see any writing on metal par so what ever was written on it was burnt. So I'm kinda stuck here with this. I did ask for a repair or schematics in the other group section and waiting for this but I hope someone here might lend me a hand to try and identify...

                                            Hello Everyone,

I have an Onkyo TX-SR353 Audio/Video Receiver (5.1 ch with HDMI) that I am having a really hard time diagnosing and I'm about to throw this in the junk and go buy a new unit that is on sale until the 7th.

                                            Symptoms:
                                            • Intermittent (part of the reason why i'm having a hard time isolating problem), sometimes will work for 10+h at a time without issue
                                            • Original symptom was wife reported loud banging noise (like someone was banging on the wall with their fists) from the LEFT SURROUND speaker and then the unit shut off.
                                            • I swapped the Left and Right surround
                                            ...

Help choosing replacement transformer for Levoit 600S SMPS

                                            Hello Community,

I'm attempting to repair the SMPS on a Levoit 600S air purifier. The transformer is likely open. It has six pins. 2 pairs on the primary side (one pair tested open) and 1pair of legs on the secondary side. Legs on the secondary side are spread wide apart (end-to-end). I've circled them in blue. Dimentons of the transformer are 22x23mm. Marking on the transformer are EE16 1.9mH-B. Fuse for the powerboard is fuse 250V 3.15A. I've been unable to find an exact match and I'm hoping for some help here to find a suitable replacment.

                                            Peace

                                            Original Xbox 1.0 PSU: Foxlink FTPS-0002 Rev. B. — 12 V low, 5 V high — transformer?

                                            Hello!

I'm looking at an original Xbox PSU: Foxlink ftps-0002 rev. B. The 12 V output is too low, and the 5 V output is too (?) high. Unfortunately I don't have an oscilloscope but only a DMM for diagnosis.

                                            Measured voltages with no load:

                                            After rectifier diodes
                                            12V: 6.17 V
                                            5V: 5.67 V

Secondary transformer pins AC measurement (really don't know if this says anything)
                                            12V: 2-2.5 V
                                            5V: 1.04 V

I also have another (working) Xbox psu from Delta. The same measures there, in order, being: 10.79,...

Is it possible for transformer substitution?

                                            Hi all,
Got this local made DC power supply (12/14V) given free as the transformer has melted. There is no marking or indication to identify what type or rating of transformer used.
Fyi,. I had a busted autogate mainboard with transformer with marking 13-0-13 . Is this the 13v dc type transformer?
                                            My questions are
                                            1. How do i test to see if the transformer is in good working condition?
                                            2. Can this transformer (marking 13-0-13) be used to replace the melted transformer on the DC power supply?
Hope you guys understand what i was asking. My intention is...
