    Jamo 7.7 and Denon amp

My father is looking into purchasing some Jamo 7.7 series speakers to go with his Denon AVR-1803 amp which he bought a few years ago. The amp isn't a cheapie at $1000!
Anyway, when we moved house, he solde off the old B&W speakers that went with the amp as they were too bulky to move along... plus the new owner of our old house wanted them and they paid some good $$$.
Anyway, we ran across a set of Jamo 7.7 floor standing speakers. I haven't been able to fish out enough information on these speakers, apart from the price tag of $4799.

Managed to run across a forum talking about them... in some language?
    http://www.avx.hu/forum/index.php?/t...150-jamo-d570/

The store selling us the speakers said 4-8 ohms and 200W. That's all they know?

Since when did speaker ohms go 4-8? Some online sources say 4, some say 8 ohms... WTF is it?

I don't know anything so will 4-8 ohms work with our amp? The Denon amp says too much jargon at the back and being confined to a bed isn't helping me!

Re: Jamo 7.7 and Denon amp

A bit of googling around revealed this page of technical details about the Jamo 7.7: http://aarestrups.dk/thejamo707series/Main707.htm

They are 4 ohms. The sensitivity isn't stellar, so don't expect them to go ear-splitting loud. They state 90dB at 2.83v, which is 1W into 8 ohms, but 2W into 4 ohms, so that's technically cheating. At 1W, the sensitivity is 3dB lower, which solves to 87dB. Pretty average. At maximum output of your receiver, which appears to be 110W/ch, that would be around 105-110dB in-room, and 116dB if you're standing just 1m away from the speakers. Not too shabby, but some like 'em louder.

The manual for the Denon receiver says it does support 4 ohm speakers for the front channels, and it is equipped with a protection circuit, so you should be okay.

Re: Jamo 7.7 and Denon amp

Just checked the back of the Denon... it says 6 ohms to 16 ohms?

Anyway, are there any other speakers apart from Jamo 7.7's that we could perhaps look into which offer high quality sound. My father is in his mid 60's, I doubt his ears are as sensitive as mine LOL

I personally use Tannoy Mercury MX3's and they are really good. Nice treble and mids... bit lacking on the lows but my KEF PSW subwoofer takes care of that :P

Just paid $540 for the Jamo 7.7's. Now I just have to pick them up and plug them in Will let you know how it goes.

EDIT: Forgot to add that we are only running a 2.1ch audio setup, not a 5.1ch setup as we don't have room

Re: Jamo 7.7 and Denon amp

          Hi Everyone,

It's been a few months with the Jamo set up. It all works no problems at all with our Denon AVR-1803. However, I do find that the volume is quite faint and I have to turn it up quite high to get a "decent" amount of volume to come out of the speakers. Is this because the amp is 6 ohms and not native for the 4 ohm speakers? I'm looking into a decent 4 ohm amp... probably the Onkyo TX-NR or SR series as they are 4 ohm compatible. Will this solve the issue with the weak volume?

          Thanks.

You need an amp that can drive 4 ohm speakers AND has more power output. Like i said above, the sensitivity of those speakers is pretty low, so they'll need quite a bit of power dumped into them to go loud.

I ended up buying an Onkyo TX-SR602 today for $150 second hand off eBay. I'll be picking it up in a few days I hope. It's a 4 ohm compatible amp! The specifications state that it will work to 165W under a 4 ohm set up. I hope this is powerful enough to power the Jamo speakers!

In terms of acoustic output, 110W vs 165W on the same speakers is a very small difference. Now, it also depends on how honest the ratings are on each amp. You'll know for sure when it arrives.

                  by momaka
More Lo-Fi speakers and another DIY surround repair. The patient this time: a pair of Philips F9217L-50R speakers from a budget Philips rack/component system from the '80's. The system belongs to my brother in-law… or actually his parents. However, they didn't want it when they moved houses and he liked it anyways, so he ended up keeping it. It's a pretty cool-looking vintage system with a wood/veneer cabinet and shelves for records and cassettes. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of it or get the model #'s (but maybe next time I visit, if anyone is curious?)

                  Hello,

I know some might say... just buy another one. Sell it as parts..!

So had this AMP for quite some time. Recently I saw light smoke coming out of the AMP. Had my fire extinguisher close by. Just kidding. Turned immediately all devices off from mains.
Let things cool a bit, and opened up the amp device. I clearly saw on the main board which hosts the 5X amp (5.1), 3 10 ohms 1W resistors had their leads looking black, while the rest of the remaining 2 x 10 ohms were brownish as being installed from factory.

Spent some time downloading the Service...

                  Epson EB-U42 projector / Caps with 0.7 ohms ?!
                  by narf
                  hi all,

first of all: i'm a (motivated) newbie, so please forgive me any stupid question i may or may not ask

i'm currently repairing a projector: Epson EB-U42 that doesn't start (no lights, nothing).

                  what i've found so far:
                  - the PSU does its job and supplies 12V to the mainboard via the connector.
                  - shortly thereafter, there is a mosfet (TS420-600B) where i can test 12V on the one side (in the data sheet this side is called Anode), Gate 0V, Kathode shorted to ground
                  - not far away, there's the first cap with a resistance of 0.7 ohms....

Logitech R20 speakers - Replacing one of the speakers.
                  by Widget
                  Hi guys,

I have a set of Logitech R20 speakers, one of the speakers wasn't working, so I took it apart & there was no continuity or Resistance when probing the Tinsel Wires. Plus looks like the speaker was exposed to liquid as there's rust on the metal speaker frame.

Just in case, I removed the other speaker and installed it in place of the damaged speaker to make sure the PCB of the damaged speaker was ok & it seemed to work fine, so it looks like it's just the speaker for now.

                  Printed on the back of the Logitech speaker is;

Part 1 - Acoustic Audio GX-400 build "quality"

Not going to lie – this will be another silly audio post/thread. If you thought the cheap Panasonic Thrusters speakers I posted about last time were bad enough, then you are about to explore some new depths in lo-fi audio here. Ladies and gentlemen, I present you the Acoustic Audio GX-400 speakers... or speaker (only pictured one for better details )

Before I continue any further, perhaps you might be asking why I even bother to post about such crap audio gear (let alone keep it). The answer...
