    SONY car audio

The Sony (low-end AM/FM/CD) I put into my dashboard is having problems (about 4 years old).

A few months ago, the display went dark for 20 minutes or so (on a long interstate night-time drive). When it came back on, the clock, radio station presets, etc. were all preserved.

When it happened a couple more times, I hit the latching button so the front face would flip downward (as if I wanted to insert/eject a CD). When I flipped the face back upward, the unit worked fine again.

Last night it went dark and is staying dark. I assume car wiring is good. Does anybody know how car stereos usually fail? If I want to open it up, apply power and check voltages, is there anything I should watch out for?

(Right now I think I'll go back to the factory radio.) Thanks in advance!

Is the clock display on a flip-down panel? If so, the contacts between the face plate and head unit need to be cleaned. My older Pioneer P3600 does this about twice a year. Quick wipe down with alcohol on cotton swab fixes the problem.
Stupidity should be a crime, especially for drivers. I have NO patience for them.
