Re: eBay Chinese Electronic Clock Kit

While visiting my Psychic advisor, I asked and she said the 7805 is cooked.

Before you go to run the clock from an AC adapter, pull the MCU out of it's socket and measure the 7805 puts out 5V.
If you use a 9VDC adapter and the 7805 is shorted, it would output 9V to the MCU instead of 5V and kill it. Or just power the clock from a 5V adapter.

Could I use the NPN tester in my multimeter to test it?

test it for shorts between pin 1 and pin 3

Usually those micro tactile pushbutton switches have two pairs of leads that are connected together without pressing the button, so measure out the two pairs of pins that are connected, and have those connected pins connected to the connected traces on the bottom of the board. These switches tend to have all 4 pins shorted together when the button is depressed.

And yes I'm surprised the clock works with the dropout of the 78L05 and 4.5V input, though likely the microcontroller will work with 3V, and so can the LEDs.

I still don't get why this clock circuit needs a 12MHz clock, or is it just the silkscreen??!!!

              it's the 8051 controller, it's usual to use it with 6, 11 or 12MHz

But there's nothing that dictates that the 8051 needs to be run at 12MHz, that clock would run fine at some other frequency. Software of course needs to be changed to accommodate, but so be it... save a bit of power...

it may have an rtc inside that needs a specific frequency for it's dividers.

I have 3 of these in my home for over 10 years now and Im planning on replacing them as I lean towards a Philips Hue home setup.
They are great units but they lost the ability to keep/store the time and settings after power outages and brown outs.
I knew it was a battery in there somewhere but never got around to looking into it.
Well an opportunity came for me to remove this from its home in my wall so I disassembled it to see what was going on.
                    I found a 3.6V LIR1632 battery spot...

                    clock radio / radio lifespan?
                    by shelby5041
                    hi
ive got a modern digital clock radio approx 15yrs old

my question is how long can a clock radio or a simple radio last ss farcas operating hours?

since elec components have limited hour lifecspan i would imagine the radio or clock radio would eventually fail.

the reason i ask is because i have my clock radio on radio function 24/7 for the past 7 years and its still working fine....i leave the radio on ..never turn off past 7years...thats approx 60000 hours

it uses very little power just a few watts i would imagine that may have something...

"Caseless Cheap Chinese electronic tools" I mean things you get from banggood, ali, fleabay, Am-Zon, etc. like AVR-Transistortester, miscellaneous signal generators, frequency counters, (variable) power supplies, oscilloscopes, low resistance meters, etc., etc. that comes optionally with a case, or comes only with a cheap piece of plastic that barely provides protection to the PCB.

Just wondering what of these (generally flimsy) tools you actually find use (almost) everyday and find indispensable for the price, compared to buying a Fluke or whatnot, if there is an expensive...

Vintage SONY Digital Clock Radio ICF-C12W no audio
                    by UserXP
                    Dear all,

I have this old radio clock by Sony from the early 80s, I guess. The clock display works, but is dim, the function board appears to be OK - but the radio unit shows no signs of life. It doesn't produce a single noise, crack or anything from either FM or AM band. It's like it doesn't even power up.
i opened the radio and it is full of some TRACON gray capacitors. They only have their negative strip printed, voltage and capacitace markings - no series, no temperature marking, nothing else.
My question is, do you know of this brand of capacitors and how bad are...

Backlight strip quality, Amazon vs Ebay vs ShopJimmy. Is there really a difference?
                    by DXseekerMO
                    Hello everyone!

Recently I've noticed that some ShopJimmy backlight strips don't have double-sided tape installed upon them when an application calls for it, and I must purchase the tape separately. In a recent chat conversation with a customer service agent I told them if this tape wasn't applied when it was called for I would begin to consider ordering my backlight strips elsewhere. It looks like this time may have come.

I recently got a TCL 65S4 with bad backlights. After looking at the SJ listing here: https://www.shopjimmy.com/tcl-jl-d65...365as-m-led-ba...
