Re: I hate thieves - Requesting help building car alarm

So ironically there's been a homeless guy at the corner down from where the theft occurred. Holding a sign begging for change. He has a backpack and I've seen him roaming the area around the time this happened. Never before seen in the area.

I feel like confronting him. Suggestions?

those cars with automatic seatbelts: I wonder how much it would freak out thieves if they suddenly go back and forth. Nothing special, just go back and forth... which would be a risk for the thief in case they need to leave in a hurry and the seatbelt just happens to be in the way...

2-way pager sounds like a good idea, add one of these so you can "properly" respond to the page:

or a blade - makes less sound.
but yes, the only person who pays attention to alarms is the owner - so a pager type is esential.
if your really confident, you can leave the sounder and indicators disconnected and hide the bit with the led etc instead of putting it on the windscreen.

then you have a silent stealth pager-alarm and you can creep up on the bitches.

What if you mounted a tazer in the dash pointed at the drivers seat. Push the start, turn ignition, and pow, 30,000 volts in the chest.

they are more likely to be in the passenger seat while ripping out your console.

So why not connect a huge capacitor up to the cars shell and once a person touches the shell they get a shock. After they release from the shell the cap charges again for another shock? The a person could have a remote control to trip a relay to open the car door disconnecting the cap from the shell so they can get in. You also could put a WiFi web cam to snap their picture when the cap is discharging.

I feel this has potential to destroy the ECU and other electronic devices as they're grounded through the car chassis.

Thinking of setting up a seat cover with little fish hooks embedded so once they sit they get a very unpleasant surprise or even some fish hooks behind the radio so as they go for that brutal tug to remove they'll wish they hadn't.

I haven't found any electronic smoke cartridges though. Anyone know where to find some? All I've seen are the pull string type. Unless you rig a motor to the string that activates when the door is opened?

i'v seen some on the surplus market used for fire-brigade training.
the cartridge and trigger are seperate, the trigger is re-useable.

What if I post an anonymous ad on Craigslist warning people about recent theft and make something up like there have been multiple security cameras that caught them in action and I'm working with the police so if anyone encounters something suspicious to get in touch with a description of the person for comparison with the surveillance footage.

Think it'd hinder whoever is doing it? I mean never know who's reading those posts word might get back to them and instill some fear

They would probably go looking for the cameras to steal them.

One could use a Normally Open time delay relay on the positive battery wire terminal and negative wires terminal a physical by-pass connection could be built into it in case one had an emergency. So when you turned off the car you would have a few minutes to leave by the time delay. When the circuit was open and the car was shut down the positive terminal and the negative terminal would be disconnected from the cars devices. The only circuit would be the one going to the Large Cap that would allow it to charge up. The positive of the cap would be connected to the shell of the car and the positive side of the battery through a step up auto transformer. The negative terminal would be connected to the negative of the cap and the negative side of the auto transformer. I few other details would have to be worked out but this is the just of it. Anyway I was only half joking when I suggested this. I am sure there are many other ways that would not be so elaborate that would not potentially cause harm and still get the job done. One has to just be creative.

From my experience, the homeless are generally nice people that are homeless either because of drug addiction or mental illness. Addiction will make you do a lot of things. I wouldn't assume the homeless guy was the person who broke into the cars.

Around here, my brother was running with some kids. They were all teenagers and well, we found something like 5 GPS units in his room. He doesn't have a car but these were car GPS units. My mum called the cops, they said no one had their serial numbers written down so they couldn't prove they belonged to the people who had their cars broken into. They also said there had been a string of many car break ins in the area and they were trying to get to the bottom of it. They told my mum to tell evin to stop breaking in and running with those guys because they were now watching them. They said it would just be a matter of time before they caught them.

They did catch them maybe a month later. Well, they caught one of the kids who rolled on the other ones.

I'd approach the homeless guy and just tell him what happened and say something like, hey, you're out here a lot. Have you seen any suspicious characters and then just watch his reaction. I don't think most thieves hang in the area after a theft like that.

Another thought, instead of trying to deter them, maybe you should try to catch them. You know, spread the word that you got a real nice fancy stereo now because of what happened, setup some cameras or something. Try to put some sort of tracking device in the actual stereo you put back in there or something. Set a trap or something and hope it happens again. Then you can call the cops and let them arrest the bad people.

Nothing worse than a thief if you ask me. A few things just as bad, but thieves suck. I had a 700$ stereo stolen out of my car once. It really sucked.

This house has a Honeywell Accenta G3 alarm system. If the main unit loses power for any reason, the external siren sounds - even if the alarm is not even armed! Entering the code to disarm it is not an option as the keypads are completely dead when the power is out.

I presume this means the backup battery inside the box has failed, but I can't get in there and replace it without also setting off a tamper alarm! Is there any way to disable the tamper alarm so that electrical work can be carried out with the power off? Or a way to replace the backup battery without setting off the...

Apologies if this is in the wrong section but being a car alarm siren that makes noise i thought it be best to put it in the audio section.
Had weird alarm issues where siren made a strange noise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjsqndhionU
took siren out of the car and checked it out and pics attached seem to be the source of the issue.
shockingly the alarm still makes its normal sound if i trigger it manually so speaker seems to be intact.

I have got an old Gardtec GT595 alarm which has got a faulty keypad with a failed LCD screen. This was apparently a very common problem with these and many people have had to replace the whole alarm because of this problem. Somebody claims to be able to repair the keypads by replacing the screen and I have tried it myself by replacing the LCD with a commonly available HD44780 1602 16x2 Serial LCD screen but it is not working. I am sure it is a problem with a driver or simular which is not allowing the screen to talk to the rest of the electronics. Does anyone know what this original screen was...

I have a seemingly rare 486 motherboard which shows no signs of life.

The Motherboard is marked with the labels B887 / 8 / 9 AI, which seems to be a Mecer branded board.

With an AT power supply hooked up, the power supply turns on but the board does not post, there is no beep and there is nothing displayed on the post analyser card, whether it's plugged into a PCI slot or an ISA slot.

I found a thread on Vogons of someone else who had the same board in working condition.

What I've tried so far: (In each case, the symptoms remain unchanged as...

Hi to all, I was diagnosing 2 smoke detectors that experienced power surge. I opened one up and found a weird fuse/resistor, which now has open circuit. I can't find this part.
Forgot to mention they both light up and I believe the test function works, but when I put smoke to them no alarm!

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

                                    Thanks,...
