I worked for a radio/electronic shop back in `75. The boss used an old canister vacuum cleaner duct-taped up to an automotive neoprene vacuum hose as a solder sucker. When it clogged up he'd cut the hose back.
I have a direct coupled electric motor piston pump I am trying to adapt. It is a nebulizer pump I have connected to the intake port a tube adapted to the body and tip of an old mechanical sucker and it works (very loudly) but I've got some leaks and it's a little clumsy.

I've never damaged a trace either using mine (the end is a softish plastic) although they do annoyingly crap bits of dried solder into your board occasionally to remind you to clean them.Leave a comment:

I can't afford a constant vacuum desoldering device either (although I am trying to make one, still in experimental stages), so I use a spring loaded solder sucker. It doesn't always work that well and has to be cleared frequently but I can't say using it has ever caused any direct harm to me or what I was working on.Leave a comment:

Not quite, I refer to it as radio shack but in Canada the stores were bought out by Circuit City and were then called The Source by Circuit City and when they went bankrupt, BCE(Bell Canada) bought the stores and they are now called The Source. Well I was planning on using a solder sucker from radio shack to replace motherboard caps, do you guys think it will suffice? I did invest a in hakko fx-888d soldering station, I was hoping the solder sucker would be a minimal investment.Leave a comment:

I'm not sure but I think the warning about using a squeeze-ball or spring-loaded sucker is that operation of it causes movement (how ever slight) of the sucker and in the hands of an inexperienced person can cause the soldering iron to move or bounce on the board, potentially damaging traces nearby. That said, I've used the spring-loaded for years but I can't say that I like them. I'd much rather have a continuous vacuum pump.
Another thing I'm not sure about is the recommendation that a 40W soldering pencil with fine tip will work. On a 6 layer board? Yeah, it might eventually but where caps are soldered to the ground plane traces you're gonna be heating it up for a really long time.Leave a comment:

says to not use a mechanical solder sucker, they can damage the board. I was planning on using a vacuum one like this

Hello, I'm a beginner for micro soldering. Right now I have some difficult to solder a qfn 20, I guess I put too much solder on the thermal-ground pad, the result is a corner of chip wich don't touch the board (last try).
I use a wire solder with hot air, I tin the board and chip before with iron and I use good flux.
I will have to solder a LVDS connector (40 pins, laptop pc), I saw a solder paste in seringe, good quality (it does not scatter).

Can someone recommend any good UV solder mask? But i need a solder mask that will stand high temperetures. The thing is...sometimes i have a bigger cooper ripped from the board, lets say mosfet pad... i reconstract it with cooper sheet, then i "glue it" with solder mask...then i use UV light...and let it cool a bit. After, i try to clean the cooper of extra solder mask..and till that part all is ok. But, when i use a soldering iron to solder that pad/cooper...the solder mask gets weaker or destroyed and finally the pad is ripped again from the board .
Is there any solder mask... -
So I though in my spare time I’d set myself up repairing motherboards mainly pin damaged lga1151 sockets types.
I’m using an achi ir sc pro rework station (gave up on my Achie ir6500 - don’t recommend)
I’ve managed to get my rework profile somewhere in the correct region (after a lot of trial and error) to get the old sockets off and reflow new ones back on again, the problems I’m getting is not all of the solder balls are re-attaching when re-flow occurs. I know this because when socket is removed pads still look clean and have no solder... -
I have a Hoover FM216LI cordless vacuum which isn't charging its internal battery.
I opened up the unit, and it has 6x Samsung ICR18650-22P cells connected in series.
5 cells were at about 3.3-3.1V. one was at 2.4V, so I assumed this cell was bad that's why the vacuum wasn't charging so I replaced it with another 18650, but after that the problem still persists, the vacuum turns on a bit and then cuts out since the batteries are empty.
So I think the over discharged battery wasn't the culprit, it was a symptom of the unit not being able to charge its batteries.... -
