    Can I test this motor?

    Hi everybody,

    I'm wondering if it's possible to test this motor with it's driver circuit. The driver circuit is blown, I just want to test the motor to make sure that it is working before I buy a replacement driver circuit.

    It's a 220V AC motor, and it's got a brown wire, a blue wire and two yellow wires. Is it possible to test this motor.

    Need to get more spec of the motor. I.E. Voltage/Current requirement, wiring information, etc.

      That's my problem Bud, I dont know.. But I thought maybe there was a generic "type" that people might recognise it and be able to help. It's part of a projector screen, the motor drops down and pulls back up the big screen. If it's not possible to determine what the wires are for, I'll just chance purchasing the driver board and see how it goes...

          Could you not contact the motor company to ask them? I would think it would be in their best interest to help you if they want to sell you a circuit board.

            I got handed it to take a look. Turned it on and it wouldn't work, no leds no relays clicking. Found out that there was no voltage reaching the mains transformer (220v/13V). Had a look around the circuit and there was a couple of scorch marks. One is visible at the transformer housing, and the second is at one of the three pins that connect to the motor. Oh, and I hardwired 12V in to the main filter capactior (after the BR, 16V / 1000uf) and it blew the crap out of one of the chips....

            So my basic two points from all that:
            1. The existing controller board is of no use.
            2. There was a scorch mark at the output for the motor, so I just want to confirm that there is no problem with the motor. I'm measuring 3Kohm across the blue and brown pins

                Hah! I appreciate your optimism / confidence... But there's two ICs that have a bulge in the middle of them, neither of them which I have the ability to replace... And that's before we address the original fault..

                I'll try contact the company, as was suggested above and see if they can suggest anything..

                  Tried to read the 'sticker' on the side of the motor from the link you supplied.
                  That did not work too well.
                  Sometimes they contain the hook up information for various voltages and frequencies.

                  It looked like some kind of industrial unit, so there may be a start / run cap.
                  Is there a manual for the machine it came out of?

                  Very often with US made motors the OEM's have a website that data sheets can be down loaded from.

                  The ruined board is a warning.
                  Did this thing take a slug of current and fail, or did the motor trash the control?

                  Might need to do some more digging.

                  How was it used, what was it used in, and did anything else get destroyed at the same time.

                  Those will give you hints as to where the problem is.

                  Another trick I used in Kuwait to figure out a bad stator on a military generator was to not trust the dc ohm meter. Used variable frequency AC to measure the sweet spot where the coil in the housing and an external cap would be in resonance. The actual frequency did not matter. The goal was to see if all three phases would tune up the same way.

                  So if that is a three phase motor, the three windings should be within a few hz of each other.

                  If one is massively out of tune due to a hidden short it will have a significant resonance frequency difference with the other two.

                  That might be an answer.

                  So a bit more digging is required.

                    This may be a stupid question, but did you try to turn the motor shaft by hand to see if it is not frozen as that could cause the chip on the motor control board to blew up.
