TAICON Main filtering cap LCD PSU

I got a VP211B monitor, completely dead. I took it apart and it has all nichicon PW wet lytic caps on PSU and and dry lytics on the signal board except for the main filtering cap. It's bulged on the vent and the cathode lead is pushed out. It's got some sort of yellow paper tape stuck on the cap, it's hard to remove. I managed to scrap enough of it away to see it's a 400v 150uf cap but I don't know what series it is.

What cap should I replace it with?

Wow it almost exploded out the top and bottom! :O

You need to give us the dimensions of it so we can find a good replacement.

Yeah the bottom cap feels like cardboard/paper. Use high quality caps then plan obsolesce with cheap main cap. The only thing I'm worry about is this monitor is 8-10 years old, hasn't function in over 2 years. I'm wondering if those nichicon caps fall in the overfill years.

AWWW SHAZBOT! I can't believe I forgot that.

It looks like 7.5mm lead spacing, 35mm height and 18.5mm diameter.

If the Nichicons are PW series, then no, they didn't. PW were never affected. It was only HM and HN
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

          NCC KXG 400v 150uF

It will be about 5mm longer, but it should fit.

40mm? It's going to sit on that small green cap and it may or may not hit the metal housing.

I think you should be fine with 120uF there, in which case this will work:

                Are you sure?

I don't want this thing randomly powering off, or malfunctioning.

                But I don't think I have a choice.

You might be able to fit the 40mm one by bending the leads closer to the bung.

Actually I'll buy both, the guy has two of these monitors, so it most likely the other one has died in a similar fashion.

Well I got both, tried the rubycon first, no-go, then tried nichicon, no-go either.
Check the output only getting 4.2v, the board says I should be getting 18v.

                      So not sure what's wrong.

                      any ideas?

Ok, so I've been searching the archives and came across this.

                        https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...99&postcount=5

The problem is I have FC and FM caps which one to use to replace the nichicon PW cap? Or should I order another PW?

I think someone on here told me, it didn't matter for caps this small, but I want to be sure.

FC and PW are pretty much direct crosses (and with UCC's LXZ).

Well I finally got around to replacing c11 with a FC cap, but no-go, still 4.2v. If you remove power connection from signal board, it goes up to 17.7v.

                            On the board,
                            NEW:
                            Nichicon 400V 150uf KXG cap
                            22uf 50v FC cap.

                            Still on board:
                            TWO Nichicon PW 47uf 50v D:6xH:12 or 5x11 3.5mm holes
TWO Nichicon PW 680uf 25v D:12.5xH:15 most likely 5mm holes.

In another thread in the archives...
                            https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...0&postcount=59

Plainbill said to replace the two Ltec caps, on this board they are PW, but the designs are identical including cap specs. Are the PW bad as in dried out? Unit was manufacturer in FEB of 2005. Or is something else going on?

I wish I had an ESR and capacitance meters right about now.

Given how much heat discolouration there is on the PCB, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the caps were dried out.

Recapped the board, and the monitor lives once again.

When I pulled the 680uf PW caps they felt light, I picked up the new ones and they were a bit heavier.

I don't know if you can tell bad ones from good ones just form weight, but I thought it was interesting.

Even GOOD caps WILL go bad if subject to enough heat!
