Cheap 15" Argos (Pacific) CRT - Surprisingly well made

Well, this CRT is destined for the charity shop. It works perfectly and is about 10 years old.

It is a Pacific combo VCR/CRT TV with a single SCART and antenna connection. Nothing special, but it was the TV I used to play PS2 on when I was young. Anyway, I tore it apart before it goes to the charity shop just to see how well it was made.

I'm extremely impressed. For a cheap TV, it has excellent build quality:

    - All Rubycon capacitors (including the small ones all across the board), except the primary, which is a Panasonic.
    - Primary cap is a 150uF 400V - well sized for the power consumption of under ~50W.
    - Soldering is superb. All components, even axial power resistors sitting off the board, don't budge if you try to bend them - I'm not sure how they've done it, but they are very well seated.
    - Murata TV tuner. I didn't know Murata made tuners. Nice.
    - Excellent line filter components made by Panasonic.
    - No components get very warm in operation.
    - Picture tube looks very nicely assembled. (It's an ORION picture tube, no idea if this is good...)
    - The power supply has an actual controller IC, not a self-resonant/ringing-choke converter.
    - All components look high spec. There aren't any bodge resistors/capacitors, for example. Big capacitors are held down with a small amount of epoxy.
    - Despite being well used, the board has no signs of heat damage as has been seen in cheap LCD monitors and some TVs.
    - The general board layout is very well done and it is clearly labelled throughout.
    - It's *not* a Vestel! I'm not sure who the OEM is for this. No clues whatsoever on the boards.

So, whatever happened to quality electronics? I'm sure we can in part blame the consumer for demanding the cheapest price possible. But this *was* a cheap, store-brand TV. And yet it looks like the engineers who designed this really cared about making a quality TV that would probably last 10-20 years.

I put it on the variac as a test to see what it would do. Strangely it just cuts out at ~122V in. It seems like they missed a trick by not designing the supply to work at down to 100V in (or lower), then they could sell the same PSU for both US and European markets. The PSU board does say "PAL".

Anyway, I will reassemble this and donate it, as it is just taking up space. There is another one in the loft somewhere.

It could be made by Orion, but it doesn't look much like the Orion-built 13" Sansui TV that I repaired. They did place caps next to heatsinks like Orion did.

The heatsinks on this TV don't get very warm, so I think that's okay.

I'm quite sure the OEM is Orion. The circuit board layout and the serial number stickers look similar to my Orion Combi 3693. In my set there can be found only capacitors by Rubycon and one by Nichicon, by the way.

It's interesting to see that in both cases Orion engaged another CRT manufacturer to label their CRT with the Orion logo.

Looks a lot like Orion to me.
The build quality of Orion TVs is usually pretty damn good.

My brother bought one of the cheapest 720p 32" LCD TV he could find a couple years (3 or 4) back, which happened to be a Orion (dunno what model). He specifically wanted to avoid noname junk (Vestel based) or stuff like Medion (no spareparts, no customer service). That Orion LCD TV had a service door on the back (which I haven't seen on any other LCD TV before) which I couldn't resist opening up (). It revealed a forest of Rubycons on the board. I couldn't find a single cap that wasn't a Rubycon. Anywhere.
And that TV still works fine to this day and hasn't had any repairs done to it. Compare that to a Samsung.. lol!

I don't know how the hell they do it, but they seem to use good quality components throughout their entire sets, despite being (relatively) cheap units (competing with the noname/Vestel junk and grocery store (Aldi) brands like Medion)

Maybe it's because decent capacitors don't actually cost a heck of a lot more than crap ones.

I think the big brands are overpriced too because of the name.

I don't see why it's not entirely possible to make something decent without being a ripoff.

The Orion CRT TVs always killed the pump-up cap in the vertical section. In the 13" model, that cap was located next to some resistors that ran hot enough to darken the board. The 13" TV I repaired lasted 10 years before the cap failed, but the larger models consistently failed after a couple years. That 13" TV had nothing but Rubycon caps.

When that cap hasn't failed, they are great TVs.

                Tv taping method made easy
                by handsworth
Just wanted to share some information that I ran across when attempting to do the tape method on a tv with a shorted panel. I normally use magnifying glasses however while watching a you tube video, the person was using their phone. It seems that the Iphone has a magnifier app and wow, it works great. I have Iphone 11 and the app is built in. Pictures attached are screen shots. Made taping the pins a breeze. Also useful when reading the tiny print on the boards. Hope this helps somebody. ...

LG OLED C1 Pixel Cleaning Made Picture Worse
                by rumi409
                 Hi,

I'm trying to resurrect a LG OLED C1 TV that has some panel banding. I used the TCON error bypass to get a picture. I was able to update the firmware as well. But when I performed a pixel cleaning to try to get the banding out, it made the image significantly worse. I tried to undo the effects of the pixel cleaning by performing a factory reset and IN_Stop, but that didn't work. Any way to reset pixel cleaning data?...

                Home made audio amp help
                by ivtec
Hi folks i need some help from the electronics pros on a small audio amp for my old lcd tv that sound is too low on the speakers despite to be on the max volume, i know the issue is on the main board , the only solution is to buy a new board but i don't want to shell out 50 bucks for a board . I have seen in Utube some home made audio amps but i'm weary about those projects, i 've seen a audio buit with an STK audio amp ,. I don't have STK4142, i have STK4273, my question if this is not fake and works can i do it with STK4273 instead of STK4142? thanks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcTZS5Y...

ASUS PRIME Z690-P - "Motherboard Impossible"
                by DynaxSC
Today I received an allegedly broken ASUS PRIME Z690-P DDR4 motherboard.

The seller of the board has written the board sometimes starts, sometime not, and it is not stable, crashes sometimies during operation in Windows.

I powered the board, and it went straight to the BIOS screen, showing BIOS version 0407.

After first next reset the board surprisingly went directly into BIOS update screen and started without asking a BIOS update and it correctly updated the BIOS to version 1620 !

There was no pendrive with an image attached to the board, only...
