Ditto to that. I own the 936 also, and find it to be superb.

Nope. - Spec games in ads...

      It says 70 watt 'consumption'.
That's at the wall socket, not watts of the element.
They don't even list the watts for the element.

For a 936 Hakko states consumption is 60 watts and 50 watts at the element.

70 watts vs 60 watts is not 40%.
I made the very mistake I tried hard to avoid when I was shopping for irons last year.

The Goot TP100AS desoldering iron looks a lot like the Hakko 808 but costs about twice as much. Even more expensive is the Denon SC-7000Z, but it can also blow hot air. OTOH here's definitely a knock-off:

Who has Hakko tips for $2.00-$2.50? I don't think I'll be needing any soon because my wife included extra ones when she bought me a 936 for my birthday, and I don't solder much.

the hakko iron looks a lot like a xytronic one, maybe xytronic bits can be used?

i use xytronics irons - i'll put up the dimensions of a bit later for comparison.

the stem that goes into the element is 28mm x 5mm and the collar is 4mm x 7mm
the bit is solid and slides into the top of the element-tube.
that is on a XY404 bit.

            Been there. - Done that.
That's how I know to look for it in ads.
My first attempt at a solder station said 80 watts for the input so I was thinking like 60 at the tip.
Nope, wire wound element, was more like 40 at the tip and the tips were crude/rough [not smooth].
I used it like 3 times. Put it put it back in the box and bought a Hakko.
            - That would be the Black RadioShack station that is sold in Blue by Farnell that has grabbed stj's attention.
            [It's JUNK stj. - I tried one!]

Despite the site's name I've bought handles and tips from this guy and they are legit Hakko.
The handles are bulk [no box, probably to cut shipping cost] but the tips are in factory packaging [sealed bags.].

[Don't miss the 'next' at the bottom. He has 71 Hakko items listed.]
Sometimes I see his ads on eBay but not all the time.
Unless he's changed his shopping cart the stated price includes shipping. I thought the cart was going to add shipping but it didn't.

I think this is the same guy. Also uses another name.

This guy also has Hakko tips cheap from time to time but none currently listed. Haven't bought from this one so can't say if they are legit parts or not.

Re: Still problems with Hakko 936?

the rough coating on the cheap bits is a protective coating that comes off when you use it.

incidentally, i like to swap irons & bases, that can be done in most cases.
as long as the iron & base both run 24v and use a thermocouple.

my chinese blue base that came with the cheap 48w weller-clone iron is now hooked to my xytronics 60w iron that has a suspicious resemblance to a hakko.

Yeah, I know how it's supposed to work.
It doesn't come off when it's milled into the base metal before they plate it.

well it's not on xytronics bit's anyway, they are iron-plated copper.
why not try putting a hakko iron on your black chinese base?
and slide the holder-section forward to unlock it so you can throw it in the bin.
the fugly holder-section is the real letdown on the blue unit.
i binned mine straight away & used a seperate stand i had.

That went in the bin when I got 3 used Hakko bases on eBay for $40.
Only had one complete handle. [And several partials.]
I just recently got around to getting two new handles for the other bases from that cantomade dude so for $70 I now have 3 running Hakkos.

shit - that's a very good base - probably way better in design than the old hakko - just because it has a shit iron doesnt mean it's a bad base.

You're not talking about that crap digital variable station at Ratshack that had an iron and used tips they didn't even sell did you?

You couldn't even buy replacement tips for that piece of crap online.

You shouldn't mix and match irons with stations the characteristics of the heating element and the sensing thermistors have to match.

If not your temperature regulation will be in the crapper.

If the iron you're swapping is designed for your station fine but you can't just plug in anything with the right connector.

                          That's the one. [I think.]
Actually it's 'parked' on the 'get around to sell' shelf collecting dust.
You can get tips for them from Sears and Frys.
Uses the same tips as Sear's Craftsman 40 watt.
                          .
I agree, you can't go swapping handles around randomly between brands.
Might have different thermistors as well as completely different pin-outs.

pinouts are all different even from the same manufacturer - so are the choice of connector,
but i found there are 2 basc types of iron,
                            thermocouple, and thermister.
thermister ones you cant play with,
but thermocouples are the same and you can mix them around - i'v done it without problems loads of times - so have friends.
as long as the element isnt one of the newer ones that run over 24v you'l be fine.

one guy i know even built his own iron from a weller TCP (magnastat) by replacing the thermal switch with a thermocouple and using one of those blue bases.
we checked it with a digital thermocouple temp meter and it's running spot-on.

if i was stateside i'd buy that radioshack base off you.
(you can bin the iron - LOL)

Recently I discovered my SSD died (OCZ/Toshiba 240 GB). It was in a USB enclosure, attached to the Linksys WRT-AC1200 router. Since then I removed the USB enclosure and attached it to my Win7 PC (AMD 8150 CPU, 970 chipset, 64 GB RAM). I also gathered one or two other USB enclosures to figure out what is going on.

(I suspect that I lost quite a few MP3 and FLAC files I recently ripped from my audio CDs, I think I lost very little un-replaceable stuff.)

I think it is IMPOSSIBLE for Win7 to have any problems with a USB enclosure as long as Win7 knows how to speak to the...

                              Any suggestions for building one?

"The 950 is compatible with the Hakko 936, 937, 939, 703, 926, 927 and 928 soldering stations." Apparently it has two heaters in parallel "24V 50W", one RTD temperature sensor 43-58Ω at room temp. 5-pin DIN.
I don't have any of those, have a 470-2 (no RTD in) and a FX-888A.

Need help to solve some problems with this laptop.

After working in bed with it one night and heating up too much (probably the cause of this problems) the sata HDD OS windows froze
After restart the original Sata HDD was not recognized anymore (but works fine in other laptops or PCs)

Tried connecting other good Sata 2.5 HDDs but not one is working in this laptop anymore (not the original nor others)

Before this had happened I observed some other problems:
When I tried replacing original mecanical HDD with a SSD HDD could not get them...

When the laptop goes to hibernation mode - either via the start menu or after a time-out - after a short period of activity where the power-on LED flashes, the power consumption should go down to almost 0 and the LED should go out. Most of the time, however, the power consumption indicates further CPU activity and the power LED remains on, but there is no image. Sometimes the CPU activity stops after a few minutes, sometimes not at all. If the laptop enters this state, it can only be brought back to life by a long press on...
