ESR meter really showing only esr

    Hello

My question is about efficiency of esr meters, as you know it has 2 types of esr meters, the bad one which is a simple AC ohmmeter simply displaying the total impédance of the capacitor. And most evoluate one able to display ESR only regardless of capacitance.

Then of course i would like to buy the second type of ESR meter, i would say a real one, i am not which ones are good or not in this way, can you please give me some advises about it ?

I was thinking to buy Atlas ESR70 which is handy for uncosy work places, testing capacitance and ESR.
Is it a good choice or not? It is not really cheap, does it exist good equivalents to it for lower price over Europe ?

    Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the link, it look as a very smart tool for the price, look like one 0 is missing in the price.
AS ESR meter is an interesting one ?

there are many, go to ebay and search "esr meter"
some are even cheaper but the display is only test.
        there are even kits.

yes i know it has a lot of different ones available, but very few are true ESR meters, most of them mesure capacitive impedance + ESR , and that is not the purpose at all, they are cheap but not useful. I ever made such crappy ESR meter as well, and became almost useless for me, even if it enables me to find really bad caps a lot of them still let me doubts.

There is a slight problem. Test voltage makes a big difference for in-circuit performance (you don't want to turn on diodes/transistors when you are just trying to test capacitors).

If you want an ESR tester to work (at least some of the time) in circuit for the purpose of finding bad capacitors then you want a meter made for that purpose. Like the Anatek Blue ESR meter, maybe. Or the Peak meter the OP mentioned. Or something else that you like.

If you are willing to give up in-circuit testing and want really good measurements then take a look at something like this handheld LCR meter. Not guaranteed to work in circuit, but awesome if you need to separate ESR from other aspects of impedance.

you cant trust in-circuit testing, that's just advertising bullshit.

stj, i think so, it is sometime working but most of time tricky near semiconductors and multiple parallel capacitors.

Uniballer, it looks like a nice tool following the link.

I took a decision today and finally ordered an ESR70 i will receive it on beginning of the next month, i will post a feedback here when i will have used this tool .

Thank you all for your advices and tips.

ESR meter not showing anything for 0.1uF
                  by jm1234
                  Hi,
my ESR meter doesn't show any ESR for this capacitor: https://www.tme.eu/sk/en/details/r46...acitors/kemet/.
Is that an issue? My RLC meter shows the capacitance: 85nF.
I'm new to ESR, so maybe this is all expected for this type of capacitor?
                  Thanks

Is it possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue meter?
                  by chth96
I read EBOOK of Testing Electronic Component and found that

"In order to test the small blue resin coated ceramic disk capacitor which has 104 50v specification,it is possible to test this small ceramic capacitor by making use of analogue meter.
Set to times 10Kohm that has 12v output from the probe to check disorder of ceramic capacitor.
It is not uncommon that testing result of digital capacitance meter is okay,But It show shorted reading when you check it with analogue meter."

Is it really possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue...

ESR meter (MK-168) not showing ESR readout on certain capacitors?
                  by JimBanville
I'm doing a recap job. I measured three Rubycon 50v 33uf electrolytic capacitors and they all showed about 31uf of capacity on the MK-168 transistor tester (ESR meter) but no ESR reading at all. I then measured some brand new caps with ratings around these rubycons and the meter correctly gave both a capacitance AND an ESR readout. Any ideas?

lowest current galvanometer/analog meter (passively powered!)
                  by eccerr0r
Most analog meters are actually current driven - a current is needed to deflect the pointer full scale. They can be lots of different values. There are ones that can take several amperes to swing the pointer as they have internal shunts.

On the other hand there are many that are rated in microamps for the intent that they draw as little power as possible from the devices under test. Some are 1mA, 500µA, 200µA, 100µA, and the ubiquitous 50µA frequently used in analog VOMs. There are even 20, 25, 30 µA and even down to 10µA. Been collecting a bunch of different ratings and...

Changing the scale of an analog meter
                  by jorpec
                  Hi

I want to change the scale of an analog meter, to monitor the charge of an li-ion single cell, so the needle at the end would point 4.2 volts and the 0 on the meter would point 2.5 volts or so, i tried to add diodes or a zener in series with the meter but the changes of the ambient temperature also changes the voltage value on the meter
I wonder how i can accomplish this so the meter would be precise at any temperature ?
